The Standard Motor

The Standard Motor Company grew to be one of the biggest companies in Coventry and employed some 11,000 people at its height. Based at its huge factory at Canley, Coventry, it produced cars for sixty years.
The purchase of the Triumph marque in 1945 added a second brand to the stable and all post-war Triumphs were designed, developed and built in Standard factories.

This book covers the formative years of the company from 1903 to 1912 and describes the vintage Standards produced between 1913 and 1930, as well as the post-vintage and Flying Standards of 1931-1939.
The author discusses the acquisition of Triumph and covers the post-war Standards and Triumphs produced between 1945 and 1961 as well as the Leyland takeover and the company demise.

For many years, Standard was one of Britain's largest car-makers. The largest motor industry employer in Coventry, Standard rescued Triumph from oblivion, produced more than 500,000 tractors on behalf of Ferguson, and was one of the biggest contributors to Britain's efforts during WWII.

This book is the first to definitively tell the story of the Standard marque - a story that's not merely technical, but financial, too, and covers the personalities and the products in equal measure. Starting with the original Standard prototype of 1903, this book covers the scores of Standard models built until the brand was discontinued in 1963 (Britain) and 1987 (India).
It also covers the Ferguson tractor involvement, millitary aero-engine manufacture, military aircraft manufacturer (including Beaufighter and Mosquito fighter-bombers), Rolls-Royce Avon turbo-jet military engine manufacture, and Triumph cars.

Triumph & Standard Cars 1945 to 1984 - A Pictorial History

Two companies with established pedigrees were brought together in 1945 by Sir John Black, then Chairman of the Standard Motor Company, to form Standard-Triumph International.
The inspired use of the Triumph brand, initially on a conventionally designed saloon, and then on a world beating range of sports cars that immediately gained success in competition, created a strong desire for the brand amongst enthusiastic motorists who appreciated its style and engineering.
Changing use of language led to the Standard name being discontinued, with all models subsequently sold as Triumphs.

This book looks at every model produced by the company from 1945 until the end of production in 1984 with the Triumph Acclaim; a car sometimes derided by purists, but the car that paved the way for co-operation between the remains of the former British Leyland behemoth and Honda of Japan.
Each model is fully illustrated, and described with comprehensive technical detail.

British Leyland - The Cars, 1968-1986

In 1968, British Leyland brought together most of Britain's motor manufacturers, with the intention of creating a robust unified group that could equal the strength of the big European conglomerates. But this was not to be.

There have been many books about the politics and the business activities of British Leyland, but "British Leyland - The Cars, 1968 - 1986" looks deliberately at the cars that came from the company, both the models it inherited and it created.

The eighteen years of the corporation's existence saw a confusing multitude of different car types, but this book resolves these confusions, clarifying who built what, and when.
The book takes 1986 as its cut-off point because this was the year that the old British Leyland ceased to exist and what was left of the car and light commercial business was renamed the Rover Group.

Works Triumphs in Detail : Standard-Triumph's works competition entrants, car-by-car

Between 1953 and 1980 the Triumph competitions department produced more than 150 'works' competition cars for race and rally. These included TR2, TR3 and TR3A, the TR3S, TRS and Conrero race cars, Herald and Vitesse, TR4, 2000, Spitfire and GT6R, 2.5 PI, Dolomite and Sprint, TR7 and TR7 V8.
In addition they prepared Standard Eight, Ten, Pennant, and Phase III Vanguard for competition. Viewed overall, what stands out as the remarkable feature of the work of the department was that they achieved such a degree of success with relatively ordinary production cars, from 803cc saloons upwards.

Author Graham Robson was manager of the Standard-Triumph competitions department in the early 1960s and himself supervised the development and management of the works TR4s, Spitfires and 2000s. Here he provides information on each and every one of the works cars of the whole 1953-80 period, with details of their specifications, entries, drivers and careers, accompanied in nearly all cases by archive photographs. In addition there is specially commissioned colour photography of important surviving examples.
