Seit seiner Gründung im Jahr 1948 strebte Porsche nach der Spitzenposition unter den Sportwagenherstellern. Dies gelang letztendlich nur durch Siege im Rennsport, insbesondere beim 24-Stunden-Rennen von Le Mans, das in den 60er Jahren von Ferrari und Ford dominiert wurde. Als eine Regeländerung Kleinserien von Rennwagen erlaubte, nahm Porsche Entwicklungschef Ferdinand Piech mit dem Porsche 917 ein großes Risiko auf sich. Dieser Wagen brachte Porsche den ersehnten Durchbruch an die Spitze der Sportwagenhersteller.
Am 14. Juni 1970 gewann erstmals ein Porsche 917 das 24-Stunden-Rennen von Le Mans. Der Langstreckenspezialist Hans Herrmann fuhr mit dem Porsche 917 Kurzheck mit der Wagennummer 23 über 4.607,81 Kilometer zum Sieg.
