Fondée en 1937 comme constructeur aéronautique sous le nom de Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget, SAAB se tourne vers la fin des années 1940 à la construction automobile en créant la division Saab Automobile en 1947.
Dès lors, la marque parvient à séduire sa clientèle par des créations originales, dont les insolites 92, 93 et 96, tout en s'imposant comme une cible privilégiée des automobilistes américains.

Au fil des années, SAAB connaît un essor considérable sur le plan technique, malgré ses difficultés financières, en lançant des modèles encore plus puissants à l'instar des Sonett, des 99 et de la légendaire 900 Turbo, et grâce auxquels Saab triomphe en compétition automobile.
Après sa fusion avec Scania (1969) et sa reprise par les groupes GM (2000) puis Spyker Cars NV (2010), SAAB existe aujourd'hui sous le giron de la holding suédoise National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB depuis 2012.

Ses moteurs turbocompressés et multisoupapes lui octroient des performances et un caractère unique. Son charisme séduit dans le monde entier et la variante cabriolet accentue son pouvoir de séduction. En 1993, la production s'arrête avec près d'un million d'exemplaires produits. Sa remplaçante est conçue sous l'égide de GM, son nouveau propriétaire.

The complete story of the front-wheel-drive Saab 96 made the brand into a rally icon in the 1960s. Superstar driving from Erik Carlsson, his wife Pat Moss-Carlsson and - later - from Stig Blomqvist, all brought real publicity and admiration for a car that always lacked the sheer straight-line performance of its rivals.
