100 Years of Bentley (reissue)

de (Auteur)

Produced in conjunction with the Bentley Drivers Club and the W.O. Bentley Memorial Foundation, "100 Years of Bentley" is a lavish celebration of one of the most recognised and revered car brands in history, from its earliest models right up the modern day cars.
A six-times winner in the gruelling Le Mans 24-hour race, Bentley is also the brand behind iconic cars such as the 41/2-Litre 'Blower', the R-type Continental, and modern classics such as the Continental GT and Mulsanne.

Featuring more than 200 pictures, many from the club's archives and some never seen in print before, this beautiful book details the whole history of Bentley. From W.O. Bentley's early days as a railway engineer along with his first attempts at modifying French DFP cars, to the company's early racing exploits, including its victories in the early Le Mans races.

Covering the Bentley brand's revival in the 1980s and renewed impetus when it was acquired by the Volkswagen group, the story is brought up to date with the awesome new Bentleys built for the 21st century and the new era of electrification just around the corner.

The Bentley Story

de (Auteur)

Walter Owen Bentley's huge, snarling race cars aggressively dominated motor racing for years. Revered and feared; driven in the 1920s by hard-partying young men known as the Bentley Boys, Bentleys beat all-comers, winning the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race five years out of six; made the cradle of British motor racing, Brooklands, their own and developed into the world's most admired sporting motorcars.
Bought by Rolls-Royce in 1931 after running into financial trouble, Bentley languished in semi-obscurity for half a century as Rolls-Royce focused on its own marque. Ironically, when Rolls-Royce hit financial problems in the 1990s, Bentley emerged from the wilderness, its glories revived with mighty turbo-charged luxury super cars and saved the company from going under. Bentley reclaimed its performance luxury driving identity.

This book tells the whole Betley story.

Bentley Motors - On the Road Magazines

de (Auteur)

A book which beautifully reproduces the rare promotional magazines that Bentley Motors (1931) Limited published in the late 1930s called "On the Road". There were 13 issues of the magazine and it was designed for current and prospective owners. It was heavily illustrated and features Derby Bentleys in use by current owners with fashionable backdrops.

After an immense amount of research, noted Derby specialist, Bernard King has been able to identify most of the cars. The magazine is very hard to find and very few people have complete sets. It may be noted that the comparable Rolls-Royce Bulletin of the time is rare but is available.

This Bentley book will be of great interest and value to collectors and enthusiasts, particularly when coupled with the identification of the cars and the provision of many tables and indices.

Two volumes hardbound with dust jacket and slip case. Page count: Volume I 416, Volume II 142.

Making Cars at Crewe

de (Auteur)

On 30 August 2002, the last Crewe-built Rolls-Royce rolled off the production line, bringing the era of Crewe-built Rolls-Royces to an end.
Peter Ollerhead, an ex-Rolls-Royce employee, has spent years researching the history of the company in Crewe, from 1938 to 1998, focusing on the endeavours and the experiences of its employees: this is a book about people.

The detailed text, illustrated with over 80 photographs, explains how the initial establishment of a Merlin aero engine factory was thwarted by the problems of building on a greenfield site, where the early days of skill shortages, a chronic need for housing and a strike were followed by a bombing raid in 1940, in which seventeen employees were killed.
The arrival of car production just after the Second World War is fully covered, as are the other enterprises that helped to keep the company afloat, from War Department power units to hip joints for the NHS.

Despite a troubled history - with two major fires, bankruptcy and large-scale redundancies - Rolls-Royce was Crewe's largest employer for many years, produced the world's best luxury cars, and influenced and shaped the town as no other company has done.
This book is a fitting tribute to the generations of workers who made it all possible.

Crewe's Rolls-Royce Factory - From Old Photographs

de (Auteur)

The collection of images in this book portray the presence of Rolls-Royce in Crewe from the heady days just prior to the Second World War. It was decided then that a factory to manufacture desperately needed Merlin aero engines to power Spitfires and Hurricanes in the defence of these islands would be erected in the town.
Images of both production and destruction chart the progress of the struggle with fascism until peace was won, allowing normal life to begin again. It was then that RR made the decision to turn the Pym's Lane factory away from armaments and concentrate all car production in the town, so the rest of the images show the many differing marques of the cars that bore the iconic RR logo along with the winged 'B' of the various Bentley models that were manufactured in south Cheshire.

Many of the photographs that illustrate the production methods and machines in this volume have not been available to the general public, making it an interesting and informative read.
The book closes with a long chapter concerned with the people and activities associated with the proud history of Bentley and Rolls-Royce in Crewe until the sad day when the marques divided leaving Bentley as the sole yet worthy owner of the Pym's Lane factory.
