This book is a collection of notes dedicated to all those who helped the engineer Sergio Limone to "play with cars" for so many years and allows Limone to believe that, ultimately, the effort was really worthwhile.
A "notebook" in lieu of a book, because books have a different narrative style, the authors intention with this document is to highlight, for the benefit of interested readers, the work of many people during the period from 1972 to 2005 (33 years of competition cars and other projects) and the achievements, led by a group of technicians whose roots went back to the Abarth of the 1960s, when the company was headed by Renzo Avidano and Mario Colucci.
Since then, the Abarth company has changed hands many times over, has been merged and transformed, but its technical strengths have always remained at the forefront, as a common thread.

Car models were produced and achieved greater or lesser success in an endless procession, and the projects were named according to a system rooted in the very origin of Abarth models: the code "SE" followed by a three-digit project number.
How the "SE" code came to be used is not that clear. When this code was used at Abarth, "SE" models alternated with those labelled "ES", as can be seen from a list drawn up in 1975 that includes the models launched up to that time from 1960.
Some models, including highly prominent ones, whose name for various reasons did not include the "SE" code, are included in the list based on the chronology of their creation. The Company setup changed several times, following various mergers involving Lancia, Fiat and Alfa Romeo.

A spectacular collection of 48 Abarth racecars, covering the whole production period, with lavish pictures by top photographers, which makes for a very exciting book. The author has access to huge archives, one from a former race mechanic, with lots of letters, documents and historic photos.
The pictures are the main focus here, interspersed by anecdotes from the golden times of motor racing.

For decades, the Turin-based company, founded in Bologna on March 31st 1949 by Karl Abarth with Hapsburg rigour and a typical Italian spirit, made enthusiasts dream by offering them 'utilitarian' cars (like the famous Fiat 500 and 600), which were capable of achieving incredible performance thanks to a little bit of skilled tuning.
When speed and acceleration were a myth, thanks also to a limited amount of traffic on the roads, Abarth made possible the dreams of those who wanted an Alfa or a Porsche, but could not afford such a high outlay.
It was a concept that has been revived by the Fiat Group (owner of the brand since 1971), which currently offers the sparkling 500 and 124 Spiders in a super sporting version.

In 2019 the Scorpion brand manufacturer turns 70 and this book intends to retrace its long history, which has its roots in none other than the equally legendary Cisitalia brand, in the name of Tazio Nuvolari and in the initial Porsche projects.
From that legendary story, Karl Abarth started his journey, initially with the famous sports 'exhausts' for every type of car, followed by a range of fast cars derived mainly from ordinary models from other manufacturers (sometimes even including a 'tuning crate' that allowed owners to produce DIY 'pocket rockets'), right up to the construction of significant racing cars, driven in many cases by famous racers such as Jochen Rindt, Arturo Merzario and Hans Hermann.

To make the reading easier, the entire history of Abarth has been concentrated (without neglecting the others) on the 20 most representative models, around which characters, fascinating stories and surprising curiosities revolve.
One of these regards the OT 1600, which was created by combining the body of the peaceful Fiat 850 sedan with the 160 hp engine from the two-seater racing 1600. The 'Avvocato' Gianni Agnelli fell in love at first sight with this bold and provocative 'little bomb' at the 1964 Turin Motor Show, and asked to try it out immediately for a trip from Turin to Milan and back, which he tackled on the 220 km/h redline.

We have looked for many of them. We have wanted to interview them, in order to give them name, face and voice. And mostly we want to find a "new" Abarth - the "first" Abarth lived with its founder Carlo Abarth, from 1949 to 1971 - thanks to their witnesses and experiences.

This book is distinguished from other publications thanks to a number of innovative, original features. It gives centre place to the images of the various models in question, specifically the Abarth racing GTs, privileging contemporary photographs, almost all of them previously unpublished. The period examined runs from 1949, the year of the official founding of Abarth & C, through to 1971, the conclusion of Abarth's independent history with its acquisition by Fiat.

The book examines only those cars that were raced and they are all documented within the context of specific events. The main aim of the text is to record, year by year, the most evident aesthetic and mechanical modifications made to the individual models. The documentation has all been drawn from rigorously contemporary books, magazines and official programmes and has been faithfully reproduced.

There was a time in which the Abarths, the cars carrying the Scorpion badge, were challenging far more powerful and prestigious marques such as Porsche and Ferrari in endurance races and the Mountain Championship classics. At that time, between the dawn of the 1950s and the early 1970s, the Abarths wrote memorable chapters in the history of sports car and prototype racing too, with cars of incredible appeal raced by drivers of international repute.

Following the book devoted to Abarth GT racing cars, this volume, again written by Renato Donati, one of the leading Abarth enthusiasts and experts, focuses on the sports cars and prototypes. All the Abarths that have competed in the category, in particular in Italy between 1949 and 1971, are analysed one by one.

Committed to an official works team, supported by Abarth, it competed with legendary cars such as the 124 and 131 in the hands of drivers of the calibre of Ceccato,Trombotto, Paganelli, Pinto, Bacchelli, Cambiaghi, Verini, Waldegaard, Röhrl e Alen.
