The Ford Mustang has always been perceived very differently on each side of the Atlantic. Created as a new American automobile concept, the Mustang was aimed at a very broad, young and popular clientele in the United States. In France, the American car of the time had an image as loaded as its chrome: that of the nouveau riche of the post-war, with ostentatious, even provocative behavior.

When the Mustang arrived in France, the image it was subjected to as "the American" was quickly counterbalanced by an avalanche of very diverse clichés, more or less provoked, which would ultimately turn out to be rather positive.
