Quella della 124 è una delle famiglie di vetture più ampie ed eterogenee nella storia Fiat. Nata come tranquilla berlina, insieme ad una pratica versione familiare, è poi stata declinata anche in chiave sportiva sia con le berline bialbero sia con le celebri Sport Spider e Coupé, per finire con la pluridecorata Abarth Rally.

La 124, inoltre, è stata costruita e commercializzata in innumerevoli Paesi stranieri, dalla Spagna all'Unione Sovietica, dalla Turchia alla Corea.

Consacré à la Fiat 124 Sport, voici un livre qui fera date et qui s'imposera sans doute rapidement comme une référence incontestable au niveau international. Aucun ouvrage paru sur le sujet ne comporte une iconographie d'une telle richesse, avec plus de 400 illustrations d'époque (photos, publicités...), dont beaucoup en couleurs. Un grand nombre de photos et de dessins sont inédits et l'on trouvera même les nuanciers des différentes versions de la voiture.

Le livre décrit minutieusement les nombreuses variantes de la Fiat 124 Sport : Spider, Coupé, versions 1400, 1600, 1800 puis 2000 cm³ et ultimes Spiders produits sous la marque Pininfarina, sans oublier les rares versions à turbocompresseur puis compresseur volumétrique.

Als Pininfarina vor dreissig Jahren den Fiat 124 Spider auf die Räder stellte, ahnte wohl niemand, welch langes Leben dem Turiner Auto-Schönling beschieden sein würde. Zwei Jahrzehnte lang blieb der offene Flitzer im Programm, immer wieder überarbeitet.

In der sportiven Abarth-Version gewann er die Rallye-Europameisterschaft, mit einem volumetrischen Kompressor versehen erreichte er die höchste Leistungsausbeute seiner Karriere. In den USA implantierte man ihm gar einen Turbolader. In production from 1966 to 1985, the Pininfarina-designed 124 Spider was a huge export success for Fiat with over 170,000 examples being sold in the USA alone, whilst the 124 Coupé, styled by Boano, also enjoyed sales success throughout the world between 1967 and 1975.
Both cars used Fiat's willing and technically advanced twin-cam engine in sizes ranging from 1400 to 2000cc. Towards the end of production the Spider even enjoyed supercharged performance in its Volumex form.

Not to be forgotten is the 124 Spider's important rule in international rallying during the 1970s, when the cars created and homologated by Abarth were very successful and always newsworthy. Over 1000 examples of the legendary Fiat-Abarth 124 Spider were built and today, deservedly, these traditionally black-bonneted/hooded cars enjoy great status amongst serious collectors.

Among the numerous novelties presented at the Turin Motor Show in 1966, of particular importance was the stunning sports car designed by Pininfarina on the basis of the 124 Saloon. This 2+2 convertible with attractive and very compact styling, was fitted with a twin overhead camshaft four-cylinder engine.
Success in terms of client approval and sales was immediate and the 124 Sport spider project was one of those that defied the passing of the years.

When it finally went out of production in 1985 a total of 200,000 examples of the spider had been sold throughout the world. Moreover, the competition versions of the 124 Sport Spider accumulated a highly respectable record in rallies, crowned by victory in the 1972 European Championship.
The sister version of the spider, the 124 Sport Coupé, designed by the Fiat Styling Centre, was also successful in terms of production numbers, with 300,000 cars being sold over its 10-year career.

This new revised and corrected edition recounts the genesis and development of the 124 sports cars, including the Rally Abarth from 1972 and the story of the most significant victories, told through the words of the leading drivers.
Completely renewed in the iconography - with many more color images than the first edition and photo shoots specially made - the book is completed by a guide to restoration and technical files on the versions sold in Europe.

The Fiat 124 Spider family originally encompassed station wagon and Sport Coupé models, the Sport Spider being based on the shortened floorpan from the 124 Sedan and Coupé. In 1966 the Fiat 124 Sport Spider forcefully bursts into the sports car market with an extremely elegant line and the world's first twin-shaft engine driven by a toothed belt. Private drivers immediately appreciate its great road qualities and use it both in speed racing and in rallies.
In 1970 the private individuals Alcide Paganelli and Ninni Russo win the Italian Rally Championship; in 1972 private individuals Lele Pinto and Gino Macaluso, assisted by the manufacturer, won the Mitteleuropean Championship (Mitropa Cup).

In the same year, Abarth prepares the absolute weapon for the Squadra Corse, which becomes official. In three years of rallying at the highest level, the Fiat Abarth 124 Rally enters the legend, capturing numerous successes and winning the European Championship in 1975 and the Italian Rally Championship in 1974 and 1975.
In 2016 the model long regretted by enthusiasts returns in a guise all new, very modern and technological, which in every way draws on the great tradition of the past.

The book tells the evolution of the 124 Sport Spider in the various displacements and of the 124 Abarth Rally and summarizes their racing events in seven chapters. Finally, it covers the genesis of the new Abarth 124 from design to competitive debut.
The texts are supported by over 300 images of the time and current, many of which unpublished, by detailed technical sheets, lists of "racing" plates and other important documents for the knowledge and correct conservation of the models.
