Les Américains ont fait entrer l'automobile dans l'ère l'industrielle grâce au système de travail à la chaîne, avec la Ford T qui fut la voiture la plus vendue au monde au début du XXe siècle. Après Ford et General Motors, d'autres marques emblématiques voient le jour outre-Atlantique : Chrysler, Pontiac, Plymouth...
Ces marques de voitures américaines vont se concurrencer, puis se concentrer pour donner naissance aux " Big Three " et faire des Etats-Unis le premier producteur mondial de voitures.

Germany is most often credited with the birth of the internal combustion engine. France gave rise to the first credible motor industry. The United States added a little Yankee ingenuity and came up with its own version of both. While the American automobile industry got off to a bumpy start, by 1908, U.S. automobile production had surpassed that of European manufacturers.
When the outbreak of World War I all but halted European production of passenger cars, American auto makers took advantage of the opportunity to establish a toehold in Europe. During the war and for two decades after, American automobiles, which were considered reliable and cheap, were a common sight on the streets of many European cities and towns.

This book contains a unique and unprecedented collection of period photographs, recording American automobiles - and their owners - in various locations throughout Europe between the years of 1900 and 1940.
Captions include the make and model of each car; information on the setting of the photograph; and remarks on interesting details, unusual accessories or distinguishing features of each car. Argo, Jewitt, Durant and Reo automobiles are represented here along with household names such as Buick, Chevrolet and Ford.

After World War I, there was a great hunger for cars in Britain. Many servicemen had learned to drive and had money from their demobilization grants to spend, but British factories were not immediately able to get back into car production so they looked to America for automobiles.
In 1919, two out of every five cars on British roads were Fords built in England, and in 1925, General Motors took over British manufacturer Vauxhall. Hudson also became a prolific assembler during this time and Chrysler built an assembly plant in Kew, west of London.

Le rodding commence dans les années 1930, en Californie, aux États-Unis. À bord de leurs antiques Ford T modifiés, les jeunes, pour s'amuser, faisaient la course d'un feu tricolore à l'autre, sur les lacs asséchés du sud californien et sur les plages de Floride.
En 1932, Ford lance son " Model B ", avec un puissant moteur, le premier V8 proposé sur un véhicule populaire et équipé également des carrosseries dépouillées (ailes et marchepieds supprimés), qui se présente comme une belle occasion pour les passionnés de vitesse pure, atteignant déjà à cette époque les 200 km/h.

Le terme d' " hot-rod " n'apparait qu'après la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale pour qualifier ces vieilles voitures d'occasion achetées par les jeunes puis modifiées par leurs soins pour gagner en compétitivité. Au fil des années, on voit apparaitre des magazines spécialisés, mais aussi des kits haute performance qui suivront l'évolution de la technique et la structuration des courses sur lac asséchés.

À partir des années 1960, plusieurs répliques en polyester voient le jour pour affronter la pénurie de caisses en tôle d'avant-guerre. Une multitude d'entreprises spécialisées nait avec l'arrivée des véhicules uniquement construits pour gagner des trophées dans les salons (show-cars).
La période 1980-1990 voit l'apparition d'un style beaucoup plus sobre : le high-tech. En France, le mouvement Rod émane de la mouvance Custom, apparue dans les années 1980 qui consistait à modifier des vieilles voitures françaises obsolètes pour les mettre aux goûts du jour mécaniquement et esthétiquement.
