First an option in 1964-1965 and then a full model line in 1966, the GTO was the first of the Supercar genre and was supported by incredibly creative marketing programs, in-your-face advertising, and almost endless option lists. Today we call vintage GTOs and competitive mid-size models with high-profile trim and large displacement, high-horsepower engines "musclecars." In de late jaren 50 zag Pontiac mogelijkheden voor het op de markt brengen van een 2-deurs hardtop die het gat tussen een luxe auto en een fabrieks hot rod kon opvullen. Het resultaat was de 1962 Grand Prix, een auto die elegantie en eenvoud combineerde. Met een 389 Pontiac V-8 motor met viervoudige carburateur als standaard, konden kopers hun auto's uitrusten met sportieve 8-gats aluminium wielen, Tri-Power carburatie, een handgeschakelde 4-versnellingsbak met pook op de vloer en zelfs - voor degene die durfden - een 405 pk Pontiac 421 Super Duty racemotor. Het publiek reageerde enthousiast en de Grand Prix werd al snel de keuze van jonge, hippe en rijkere kopers.
