Knuffig-runde Form, charmantes Gesicht und große Kulleraugen - als der Fiat 500 im Juli 1957 das Licht der Autowelt erblickte, schmolzen zahlreiche Herzen dahin. Der Winzling aus Turin, der es anfangs mit nur 13 PS gerade so auf Tempo 85 schaffte, wurde zu einem der beliebtesten Automodelle aller Zeiten und erreichte ähnlichen Kultstatus wie der VW Käfer und der Citroën 2CV.

Bis heute ist der Fiat 500 als Oldtimer heißbegehrt. In den 60er und 70er Jahren meisterte er den Spagat zwischen erschwinglichem Transportmittel - für rund 3000 DM war er zu haben - und der Verkörperung eines Lebensgefühls. Und das trotz spartanischer Ausstattung und wenig Platz für Gepäck. Innen war das Familienauto im Kleinformat jedoch erstaunlich geräumig und sobald man das Faltdach aus Stoff mit wenigen Handgriffen über der Heckmotorhaube zusammengefaltet hatte, kam im Fiat 500 sogar Cabrio-Feeling auf.

The Fiat 500 is, perhaps, the car that marked an epoch more than any other. Five million examples were built between the time the car was introduced back in 1957 and 1975, when Turin decided to end its production.

De Fiat 500 & 600

Fiat, de pionier van de kleine auto, introduceerde in de jaren vijftig twee cruciale compacte modellen als opvolgers van de Topolino: de 600 en de 500.
De 600 werd direct een groot succes, groeide uit tot de meest geliefde en verkochte auto in Italië en vond wereldwijd honderdduizenden eigenaren, tot halverwege de jaren tachtig. Tegenwoordig is de 600 zeldzaam op de wegen.

Het verhaal van de 500 is echter een ander hoofdstuk: de introductie mislukte en deze kleinste volwaardige auto vond aanvankelijk weinig kopers. Pas na diverse verbeteringen en prijsverlagingen begonnen de verkopen te stijgen. Vanaf 1960 kwam de 500 pas echt in de lift en werden er miljoenen exemplaren verkocht. Tegenwoordig is de 500 waarschijnlijk de meest geliefde klassieke auto in Nederland.
