Porsche's first visit to Le Mans came in 1951 with a streamlined 356 model, complete with aerodynamic wheel fairings. In a precursor to the reputation Porsche would establish over the next seven decades at the famous endurance race, the 356 ran like clockwork, beating the coveted record for the shortest time spent in the pits. Since that memorable debut, Porsche has won outright at Le Mans 19 times, more than any other marque, with a record series of seven consecutive victories from 1981 to 1987. In 1953 Porsche began to build cars especially designed for motorsports, starting with the 1500 RS Spyder, the then official name. The light construction with under 700 kilos kerb weight plus the powerful engine made for excellent driving performances and it was road legal, too.

The sporting successes of the Porsche 550 Spyder are legendary: In 1956 Umberto Maglioli achieved the first motorsports overall-victory for Porsche at the Targa Florio. Numerous victories and podium finishes followed.
Until 1957 just a little more than 100 Spyders were built, which makes the car one of the most expensive Porsches today. Its most famous owner adds to this: The news of James Dean's tragic death by accident in a 550 Spyder went around the world - to this day both are immortal.

It was no small leap for Porsche from its giant-killing Spyders to the powerful Type 917 that swept all before it. The gap was bridged by its 900-series sports-racing cars, here depicted in rare original photography from the Ludvigsen Library.

Karl Ludvigsen has personally selected both dramatic action images and intimate technical details of the 904, 906, 907, 908, 909 and 910, which with their air-cooled flat-six and flat-eight engines brought Porsche to the fore in both international sports-car racing and the European Hillclimb Championship, which Porsche won in 1966 and 1968.
These were the years of spare-no-expense building of fresh cars for every race, funded secretly by Volkswagen, with exotic titanium and beryllium components. Led technically by the thrusting Ferdinand Piëch, Porsche built the ultra-light 908/03 expressly to win both the Targa Florio and Nürnburgring - which it did.

The 904, its full name "Porsche 904 Carrera GTS", was a special Porsche model in many ways. Due to Ferdinand Porsche's unique design, the sports car is affectionately called "Butzi's masterpiece" and many still count it among the most appealing road racing cars ever.
In 1963 the Porsche 904 was brought to life in a record-breaking six months - including the time for development. And this is just one of the reasons that made the car a flagship of innovation.

For the homologation as a racing car, about 100 Porsche 904 were licensed as road vehicles and sold to private customers. The demand was so strong that the car soon became a highly exclusive rarity. The unique look of the Porsche design and the combination of technical innovations and low production costs added to the cult status of the Porsche 904 that lasts to the present day.
