The Porsche 914 and 914-6 (1970-1976) - A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity
Often overshadowed by the Porsche 911, the 914 has long been underestimated. While some professional rally drivers once doubted its handling at high speed, the Porsche 914 still achieved notable success. It recorded at least 41 class victories and 71 other podium finishes in Regional, National, and International rally events.
In circuit racing across Europe, the 914 often won its class and even claimed overall victories. In the United States, it performed strongly in IMSA GTU, national and international competitions, as well as numerous SCCA regional races. The 914 began racing in 1970 and continues to appear in SCCA GT classes today.
This book presents the motorsport history of the Porsche 914 through photographs, statistics, factory records, and interviews. It offers a new perspective on the car's capabilities and achievements.

The Porsche 914, introduced in 1969, was a unique collaboration between Porsche and Volkswagen. Often debated as either an affordable Porsche or an upscale Volkswagen, it was, in reality, a well-conceived project aimed at offering a technically advanced sports car at a reasonable price. This was achieved through synergies with Volkswagen, Porsche's long-time partner. The 914's design remains timeless, built around a mechanical layout long envisioned by Ferdinand Porsche. This book provides a comprehensive historical overview and a detailed photographic guide to identifying different versions. It includes technical specifications and helps clarify the short yet significant production run of this Stuttgart sports car, now highly valued by enthusiasts and collectors.
Porsche 914 & 914-6 : The Definitive History of the Road & Competition Cars
Launched in 1969, the 914 series went through many problems and many changes before production came to an end in 1976. It was constantly improved during its short life, but time just ran out for the model. It is interesting to note that until the Boxster made its debut, it remained Porsche's only mid-engined production car, although the company's racing models had been built with this layout for some years.
The 914 also had a fine competition history - something that is often overlooked or run down because it wasn't as brilliant as that of the 911's. But by normal standards, it was indeed a fine history. There were also a large number of specials built on the 914 chassis, and both of these aspects have been covered in detail.
The 914 series has often been cited as the forgotten Porsche, but there is a growing band of enthusiasts who only have eyes for the model. The handling is of course a major factor contributing towards the enjoyment of the type, but a large number of people like the styling, and the fact that for so many years this was the most affordable of all Porsches to own and run. Now the times have changed and the model has appreciated, not only in value, but in terms of awareness as well.
This book records the full international story of the mid-engined 914, from concept through to the final production car, illustrated throughout with contemporary material.
