Subaru Impreza WRC - The Autobiography of P8 WRC
The factory blue and yellow Subaru Imprezas that competed in the World Rally Championship from 1993 to 2005 became icons beyond rallying. Developed and run by Prodrive, these cars won three consecutive manufacturers' titles and carried Britain's only two World Rally Champions, Colin McRae and Richard Burns, as well as Norwegian champion Petter Solberg. Among many successes, McRae's victory in the 1997 Safari Rally remains especially notable.
The win was unexpected, as the demanding event was seen as unsuited to McRae's aggressive driving style. Guided by co-driver Nicky Grist, he nevertheless secured a clear and decisive victory.
The car used in Kenya was registered P8 WRC. The Safari Rally marked its debut, followed by only two further factory appearances: second place in Argentina and a dominant but unfinished run in Indonesia. After the 1997 season, P8 WRC entered private ownership and continued to compete for many years, though heavily modified from its original Safari form.
This book traces the full history of P8 WRC, from its Kenyan triumph to its complete restoration by Prodrive to original Safari specification, completed in 2023.
