Coachwork on Ferrari V12 Road Cars 1948-89
Of all the great cars to bear the Ferrari name, none are as much loved or as widely respected as the classic V12 road cars built between 1948 and 1989. Their stunning performance was matched by the equally stunning beauty of their hand-crafted coachwork, which came from the finest carrozzerie in Italy and occasionally elsewhere.
Ferrari had set out as a maker of sports and racing chassis but soon realised that there was a ready market for roadgoing versions of their cars as well. For the bodies, they turned to Italy's specialist coachbuilders, who rose magnificently to the challenge. They created the best of the best, for those who could afford it and who had the taste to appreciate it.
This book dwells on the coachwork created for the V12 road cars, examining the main types produced by each of the major carrozzerie as well as some less well-known examples. It traces the story of what gave Ferrari road cars their visual appeal from the early days, when Farina, Ghia, Touring and Vignale were the favoured coachbuilders, and when each body was hand-crafted to individual order. As the 1950s wore on, the company's allegiance changed to Pininfarina, which went on to dominate the production of Ferrari bodies. Meanwhile, some customers continued to demand individual designs, and a selection of those is included.
The coachbuilders are presented in alphabetical order, with a brief introduction to each company's history, personalities and activities, followed by a gallery of photographs of their creations, with extensive explanatory captions. Accompanying the overall exterior views are shots of interiors, facias, and of trim details inside and out.
There are more then 370 photographs, the great majority by the leading automotive photographer Simon Clay. The result is an enthralling and visually stunning study of the gorgeous, near faultless styling of V12 Ferraris over a period of some 40 years.
The Ferrari Testarossa, unveiled in 1984 at the Paris Lido, remains one of the most iconic Ferraris to date. Its striking design, featuring a wide rear track and prominent air intake strakes, captured global attention. Powered by a powerful V12 engine, the Testarossa became a symbol of automotive excellence.
This book, part of our Supercars series, explores the technical and stylistic evolution of the Testarossa. It examines its predecessors, the 365 GTB/4 'Daytona' and the 512 BB, as well as its successors, the 512 TR and the F512 M. Additionally, it covers special editions like the Spider commissioned by Avvocato Gianni Agnelli and the prototype Mythos designed by Pininfarina. The book also includes road tests from the magazine Quattroruote, providing further insight into the Testarossa's performance and capabilities.

Presented in 1984, the Testarossa was the last (production) Ferrari to be marketed during the lifetime of the "Commendatore". Its unique style and breathtaking performance immediately made it an icon of automotive history. Ferrari continued to improve it, first in 1992 with the 512 TR, then in 1994 with the F512 M. Its name pays homage to the glorious Testa Rossa of the 1950s that distinguished themselves on circuits around the world, particularly during the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Testarossa is a direct descendant of the fabulous Berlinetta Boxer of the 1970s powered by a twelve-cylinder Boxer. Derived from that of the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 cars, this engine with multiple victories and world titles is the first to be mounted in a central rear position in a production Ferrari.
This book looks back at Enzo Ferrari's beginnings as a driver, team manager and constructor, explores the prestigious past of the Testa Rossa, the Formula 1 cars with twelve-cylinder Boxer engines before presenting the saga of the BB, the fabulous Testarossa and its derivatives.
