Dornier Wal - de eerste grote zeeverkenner van de Marine Luchtvaartdienst

Binnen het trio van grote vliegboottypen dat vóór de Tweede Wereldoorlog bij de Marine Luchtvaartdienst werd gebruikt, had de Dornier Wal een bijzondere positie. Het was het eerste maritieme verkenningsvliegtuig dat in serie aan de Koninklijke Marine in Nederlands-Indië werd geleverd. Daar werd het bijna achttien jaar onafgebroken ingezet.

Deze tweemotorige hoogdekker kreeg ook in de Nederlandse burgerluchtvaart een opvallende rol. Als eerste volledig uit lichtmetaal gebouwde vliegboot werd de Wal vanaf 1927 in licentie geproduceerd door de N.V. Maatschappij voor Vliegtuigbouw Aviolanda in Papendrecht.

Dornier Do X - The Story of Claude Dornier's Legendary Flying Boat

Though only three were produced in late-1920s/early-1930s Germany, the Dornier Do X was the largest flying boat of its time and flew passengers on international flights in extreme comfort during the pre-World War II years.
Powered by twelve engines, the aircraft could accommodate over 100 passengers and crew and included sleeping and dining areas.

Dornier Do 22 - Design, development, testing and service with the Yugoslav, Greek and Finnish Air Force

Developed by one of the most famous German airplane manufacturing companies at the request of Yugoslavia, the Dornier Do 22 was never adopted by the Luftwaffe and was condemned to obscurity as one of the peripheral airplane types.

With only 29 manufactured in total, including the sole prototype, Do 22 was not a major success for Dornier-Werke. As such, it did not get the attention it deserved in the history of aviation. Its distinct service with the air forces of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Kingdom of Greece and Finland was to date only covered superficially.
This book sheds light on the entire history, development, use by the three countries and the subsequent fate of the Dornier Do 22.

Dornier Do 24 Units (Osprey)

Perhaps the most seaworthy flying boat ever built, the elegant, tri-motor Dornier Do 24 served with both the Allied and Axis forces in very different parts of the globe during World War 2, garnering an excellent reputation along the way.
This study uses archival records, first-hand accounts and revealing photographs to illuminate the combat career of this remarkable aircraft for the first time in English. The German-built Do 24 was the Netherlands Navy's principal aerial asset during the Japanese invasion of the East Indies. While the survivors of that ordeal served in the Australian Air force, in occupied Holland and France production continued apace and the Do 24 equipped the German Air-Sea rescue service, whose crews loved and respected the machine.
The type witnessed the rise and fall of the Luftwaffe over all the European seas, took part in the desperate evacuations of Wehrmacht troops on the Baltic in the face of the overwhelming Soviet advance, and was pressed out of service only with the withdrawal of Spanish Do 24s in 1969.

Dornier Do 27

The Do 27 is one of the most successful German aircraft developments of the post-war period: a distinctive, robust and extremely versatile machine. Built by Dornier from 1956, it was the first aircraft to be mass-produced in Germany after the war.
For decades, the aircraft, which was capable of short takeoff and landing, also flew with the German army. Prof. Bernhard Grzimek's Zebra Dornier, which he used in his nature films in Africa, became famous worldwide.

Dornier Do 31

The Do 31 is still unique in the world in terms of type and design. The machine ready for series production was the size of a medium-sized business jet and could carry five tons of payload or 36 fully equipped soldiers - which would have revolutionized the market for combat zone transporters.
However, there were only a few prototypes, the development, construction and testing of which were extremely exciting, brought about groundbreaking design innovations and remain a milestone in aircraft development to this day.
