In 1898, a European company imported three "horseless carriages" to British India, which found buyers in some of the country's princely states.
This event marked the beginning of the Maharajas' great love affair with automobiles. The arrival of these cars completely changed the lifestyle of Indian royalty, triggering a devouring passion that lasted for decades.

Recognized today as an integral part of the fascinating history of the automobile, only a few hundred have survived among the thousands of these magnificent, sometimes devilishly exotic cars that once belonged to the five hundred or so wealthy Indian princes of the first half of the 20th century.
Some of them are abroad with collectors or exhibited in museums in Europe or America, others are in the hands of Indian collectors, and still others among the most remarkable are still the property of declining Indian princely families, vestiges of a prestigious past.
