De eerste Vespa die in 1946 op de markt kwam, heette "Paperino" (eendje), had 98 cm³ slagvolume en haalde maximaal 60 km/h. De uitvinder was Corradino D'Ascanio, een vliegtuigingenieur die kort na het einde van de oorlog met de uitwerking van zijn project begon.
Het ontwerp was eenvoudig, economisch, gemakkelijk te rijden en innovatief. De techniek bekleedde bij met een bolle blikken carosserie. Het concept was een groot succes en is dat is het tegenwoordig nog steeds.
De tand des tijds knaagt echter wel hevig aan de scooters uit Pontedera.
