Boeing 707 (Legends of Flight)

Beginning in the late 1950s, the Boeing 707 revolutionized passenger aviation like almost no other aircraft, as the elegant four-engine aircraft made it possible to serve intercontinental long-haul routes quickly and economically.
This volume in the Legends of Flight series examines the history of this classic jet aircraft, whose memorable design has survived to this day, its basic features still recognizable in the Boeing 737. The history of 707 operations is presented in detail, as is the use of the type by various world military forces and governments - and its famed use as the US presidential Air Force One in the 1960s through the 1980s. Its use by many of the world's most famous airlines, including American, TWA, Pan Am, Northwest, Continental, Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, and Air India, is also covered.

Technical specifications for the 707, the Dash 80 prototype, the Boeing 720 (derived from the 707), the aerial refueler KC-135, and E-3 Sentry, as well as contemporaneous photographs, bring to life the fascinating history of Boeing's first commercial jetliner.

Boeing 707 Group: A History

The Boeing 707 family - that includes the forerunner Model 367-80, the KC-135 series of military transports and the slightly smaller Model 720 - was the pioneer of the sweptback wing, incorporating podded engines borrowed from the B-47 military bomber. It was the aircraft that many regard as the design that really ushered in the Jet-Age.

This new book from the established aviation historian Graham Simons examines the entire course of the Boeing 707's history, charting an impressive design evolution and illustrating the many ways in which the 707's legacy continues to be felt to this day.
In laying the foundation for Boeing's preeminence on the word's jetliner market during the 1980s and 90s, the 707 paved the way for future innovations in both civilian and military fields and Graham Simons has put together an image-packed history that records the historic and landmark milestones of this iconic aircraft type.

Boeing 707: Boeing's First Jetliner

The first widely used commercial jet, the Boeing 707 brought America into the 'Jet Age' of the late 1950s and created the template for worldwide air travel today. The 707 first flew on 20 December 1957, and less than a year later it made its first commercial flight from New York to Paris.
Initially flown mainly by Pan American, the Boeing 707 was soon operated by both domestic and international airlines around the world, and the popularity of the aircraft led to increased development of air-traffic-control systems, airport terminals, runways and airport infrastructure.

The 707 remained in production until late 1978, by which time it was too small to handle the increased passenger densities on many routes, and it was retired to make way for more-modern jetliner types. By the end of production, a total of 1,010 aircraft had been built for civil use, though many of these subsequently found their way into military service, and purpose-built military variants remained in production until 1991.

This book provides a fascinating portfolio of images depicting a wide range of Boeing 707 variants in service around the world, in passenger, cargo and military use. Like the aircraft itself, the photographs, taken at airports in North, Central and South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia, span the world, showcasing many of the aircraft's diverse and colourful liveries.

E-8 JSTARS - Boeing-Northrop Grumman's Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (Legends of Warfare)

The Boeing C-135 Series: : Stratotanker, Stratolifter and other Variants

Though the C-135 was originally designed over forty years ago as an aerial refueling tanker, (749 of the 820 were built as tankers), more than 600 of all types of C-135s are still flying. Boeing's C-135 series has been the most successful military jet ever built.

This book, Don Logan's sixth, tells the story of the Boeing C-135 series including: tankers, reconnaissance, airborne command post, weather, test, and special purpose models. All C-135 aircraft types, along with their operating units are covered.
Tables and serial number lists are included listing all C-135 configurations by serial number. Re-engine programs and facts including serial numbers of the C-135s and the identity of the donor aircraft in the airline re-engine program (E-model types). Also included: a listing of all C-135 losses, including date and reason for loss; three views of C-135 major configurations; selected aircraft nose art; and all USAF, ARFES, and Air National Guard unit markings.

Boeing 707

The four-engine Boeing 707 revolutionized passenger aviation in the 1960s and 70s like no other aircraft, as long-haul intercontinental flights could now be operated quickly and economically.

Reduced ticket prices meant that even normal people could afford transatlantic flights and mass air travel was born. Its lines made the 707 the archetype of the "jet plane" and it was considered a design icon for a long time.

Boeing E-3 AWACS

The Boeing E3-A "Sentry" with its unmistakable silhouette is "the" AWACS aircraft par excellence (AWACS = Airborne Warning And Control System - flying early warning and command post).

The aircraft with the distinctive radome on its back has been serving the role of high-performance reconnaissance aircraft and flying command center since the late 1970s. Even major events, such as football matches, are monitored from a height of 12 000 m in times of increased terrorist threat.
