Airship - Design, Development and Disaster

"Airship" charts the history of lighter-than-air craft from the continental pioneers of the late 19th century through to European airship stations in the Great War, Germany's pre-eminent commercial and military zeppelins, the construction of British behemoths R100 and its sister ship R101 and the calamitous losses of USS Akron in 1933 and LZ129 Hindenburg in 1937, events which ultimately heralded the end of large-scale airship production.

The historical development of airships is seen to be protracted and fractious, as the armed forces of leading European and US powers toyed with commercial propositions while trying to bend them to military uses.
The book examines the axial role of Count Zeppelin, the development of the Zeppelin in Germany as bomber and reconnaissance craft, and the way the British Admiralty, French, Italian and American engineers attempted to imitate German design.

The airship coincided with a time of international strife: mass unemployment, General Strikes, the Wall Street Crash and the growing shadow of fascist tumult. Airship draws on original sources, official documents and private letters including interviews with figures like Mary Stopes-Roe, daughter of the airship builder Barnes Wallis.

X-Planes of Europe: Secret Research Aircraft from the Golden Age 1947 - 1974

Aunque se ha escrito mucho sobre los legendarios "aviones experimentales" estadounidenses de esta época, se sabe mucho menos sobre muchos de los aviones de investigación secretos y exóticos diseñados y construidos en Europa, especialmente los de Francia.
Adelantados a su tiempo, estos aviones eran de primera categoría. En Gran Bretaña, el transónico DH 108 Swallow ya se acercaba a la barrera del sonido en 1946, y el avión de flujo laminar AW52, con ala totalmente libre, realizó su primer vuelo en 1947.

A pesar de los cinco años de ocupación en tiempos de guerra, Francia ya utilizaba aviones a reacción de diseño propio en 1946. El concepto de ala volante en flecha N-20 se probó en Suiza en 1951, y el avión de prueba sueco SAAB 210 de ala delta realizó su primer vuelo en 1952.
El Fairey Delta 2 pulverizó el récord mundial de velocidad aérea (que anteriormente ostentaba un North American F-100C Super Sabre) por un asombroso margen del 37%. Este avión fue posteriormente fundamental en la investigación para el programa del avión supersónico Concorde.
El aparatoso Rolls Royce 'Flying Bedstead' de 1953 fue pionero en el concepto de despegue y aterrizaje vertical (VTOL, por sus siglas en inglés) que se utiliza hoy en día en el nuevo caza de ataque conjunto Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II.
