F-104 Starfighter (Pilot's Flight Operation Instructions)

Created by famed Lockheed designer Kelly Johnson, the F-104 Starfighter was designed to compete with Soviet Mig-15s. Equipped with a huge and powerful J79 engine, the aircraft could reach speeds well in excess of Mach 2.0, while its thin, trapezoidal wing provided extremely low drag with terrific acceleration and rate of climb.

Unforgiving and sensitive to control inputs, the F-104 killed many pilots and developed a reputation as a "widow-maker". Despite its shortcomings, the Starfighter enjoyed a long career.
It flew in the air support role during "Rolling Thunder" in the Vietnam War. It also saw extensive service in foreign air forces and NATO. NASA continued to use the F-104 as a support aircraft until 1995.

This pilot's flight operating handbook was originally produced by the USAF. It has been slightly reformatted but is reproduced here in its entirety.

The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is a single-engine, supersonic jet interceptor aircraft originally developed for the United States Air Force by Lockheed. One of the Century Series of aircraft, it was operated by the air forces of more than a dozen nations from 1958 to 2004.
A total of 2,578 Starfighters were produced and deployed, mostly by NATO members.

El Lockheed F-104 Starfighter fue un interceptor supersónico estadounidense de un solo motor, ampliamente utilizado durante la Guerra Fría, sobre todo como caza-bombardero.
Diseñado por Lockheed como caza diurno para la Fuerza Aérea de Estados Unidos y parte de la "Century Series", fue desarrollado a comienzos de la década de 1960 como avión polivalente para todo tiempo. Su producción se extendió a otros países y el F-104 sirvió en un total de 15 fuerzas aéreas.

A pesar de sus altas prestaciones, el Starfighter adquirió una mala reputación en materia de seguridad, especialmente en servicio alemán. Entre 1961 y 1989, la Luftwaffe perdió 292 de sus 916 aviones y 116 pilotos. La elevada tasa de accidentes provocó fuertes críticas públicas y le valió el apodo de "Hacedor de viudas".

German Starfighters (Volume 2) - The Story in Colour: Training and Service

Este segundo volumen sobre los Starfighter alemanes analiza la formación y el servicio operativo de estos aviones de combate. El autor, Klaus Kropf, cuenta con casi diez años de experiencia de vuelo en el F-104 y unas 1.900 horas de vuelo.

Tras completar su formación básica como piloto en Texas, realizó el entrenamiento en Starfighter en la base aérea de Luke, en Arizona, entre junio de 1971 y febrero de 1972. Posteriormente llevó a cabo la adaptación en Europa en Jever y sirvió durante varios años como piloto de caza-bombardero F-104G en el Jagdbombergeschwader 31 en Nörvenich. A finales de 1980 fue destinado a la Tri-National Tornado Training Establishment en RAF Cottesmore, Reino Unido, donde permaneció tres años como instructor de Tornado.

Aunque su actividad de vuelo en el Starfighter terminó hace muchos años, su vínculo con este avión sigue siendo muy fuerte.
