Douglas DC-3: 80 Glorious Years

Like the P-51 Mustang and Supermarine Spitfire, the Douglas DC-3 is an iconic aircraft design. It has endured more than any other with several hundred still in use worldwide in locations as far apart as Africa, Antarctica and the US. Many of the current operators use turbine conversions of the DC-3mainly using Basler, SAAF and Dodson International the main proponents.

Just about every major post-war airline began their schedules with the DC-3. Many took advantage of post-war military surplus C-47s that had already written huge volumes of history with their roles with the US Army Air Corps in the Second World War such as the D-Day landings. Many enthusiast organisations still keep DC-3s airworthy and fly them for members. However, the days of DC-3 operations are now nearing an end thanks to spares unavailability, cost and the shortages of Avgas fuel in remote parts of the world.

As this book recounts, the Douglas DC-3 is to aviation what the Volkswagen and Ford were to motoring, and what the DC-3 operators started, the 21st century Airbus/Boeing operators continued thanks to the astonishing legacy of this remarkable aircraft.

The Amazing Gooney Bird : The Saga of the Legendary DC-3/C-47

The DC-3 is the plane that made civilian transport that made civilian transport a profitable reality, and has become a legend in its own time. It has many names and designations - Skytrain, Spooky, Puff the Magic Dragon, DC-3, C-47, R4D, Li-2 and others.
But the name that most pilots know it by is the "Gooney Bird." And it has played many roles besides being an aerial workhorse to transport people and cargo. It has been a bomber, fighter, airborne communications center, amphibian, living quarters, hospital, flying washing machine, and command post.

When some of the more than 10,000 built, and additional hundreds in Japan and Russia, ended their days, they have been made into a hamburger stand, tea house, mobile home, seaside cottage, an officers club and even a chicken coop. Many have been put on static display at more than 200 museums around the world.

After more than sixty years, 1,000 of them are still flying the world's skies. The DC-3/C-47 has surpassed all other aircraft ever built in faithful service, dependability and achievement. This is the story of its conception, design and amazing life in war and peace.

C-47 / R4D Units of the ETO and MTO (Osprey)

The C-47 units of the USAAF were an integral part of some of the most dramatic episodes of the European war: the airborne assaults in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, southern France, Operation Market Garden and the crossing of the Rhine. The mass fratricide off Sicily, the night drop for D-Day and the Bastogne supply missions are also covered, along with more typical accounts of training, formation flying, airdrops and casualty evacuation missions.

This book details an aircraft that remains a popular favourite and an acknowledged design classic, carrying out missions every bit as strategically important and as dramatic for the aircrew as those of the fighters and bombers.

Contents: Origins - North Africa - Sicily and the 'Soft Underbelly' - D-Day and Normandy - Airborne Invasions and Air Resupply - Italy and the Balkans - Decisive Battles and Victory - A New Way of Air Warfare - Appendix 1: USAAF / USN C-47 Units In ETO and MTO - Appendix 2: The Aircraft.

C-47 / R4D Skytrain Units of the Pacific and CBI (Osprey)

From Pearl Harbor to VJ-Day, the humble Douglas C-47/R4D carried out missions every bit as strategically important, and as dramatic for the aircrew involved, as those of the fighters and bombers in the vast Pacific/CBI theatres. The C-47's wartime operations paved the way for post-war military and civil air transport, proving that aircraft could safely conduct routine flights from the USA, Australia and India throughout the Pacific and South-east Asia.
The flights also demonstrated how the USAAF was able to invest in, and carry out, a mission that it had barely prepared for in terms of doctrine pre-war. In addition to linking theatres, the C-47 found itself in the vanguard of combat operations on virtually a daily basis in New Guinea, Burma, the Philippines, the SWPA and China.

The importance of these missions, and the dangers faced by crews tasked with carrying them out, is chronicled in numerous first-hand accounts from the aircrew involved in this unique volume on the Allies' favourite transport aircraft of World War 2.

Contents: Opening 1941-42 - Build-up 1941-43 - Pacific 1942-43 - CBI 1942-43 - Pacific 1943-44 - The CBI 1944-45 - The Pacific 1944-45 - Victory and Conclusion.

Douglas DC-3 and C-47 in Latin American Military Service

This book examines in detail one aspect of the DC-3/C-47 history which is not that well known, the fact that DC-3s and their military equivalents and derivatives have been in continuous service in that geographically diverse region of the world known as Latin America for more than 75 years, longer than anywhere else in the world.

The DC-3 and C-47 came upon the scene at precisely the right moment in every nation. They were in use from the Rio Grande south all the way to Antarctica and from the remote Galapagos in the Pacific to the Antilles chain in the Caribbean.
As always, they were used as workhorses and heavy-lifters, but a significant number, surprisingly, saw combat service in a number of most exotic circumstances, both as ad hoc bombers and combat aircraft.
C-47s were not only the most numerous type in some national inventories, but often the most heavily utilised and valued.

Richly illustrated, with tables describing the often extraordinary individual services lives of each-and-every known aircraft, this is a testament to the men and women who, for three-quarters of a century, have sweated, cursed and yet loved these magnificent aircraft.

The ATL-98 Carvair : A Comprehensive History of the Aircraft and All 21 Airframes

The ATL-98 Carvair is a truly unusual aircraft. Converted from 19 C-54 World War II transport planes and two DC-4 airliners into a small fleet of air ferries by Aviation Traders of Southend, England, the Carvair allowed commercial air passengers to accompany their automobiles onboard the aircraft. The planes were dispersed throughout the world, operating for 75 airlines and transporting cars, royalty, rock groups, refugees, whales, rockets, military vehicles, gold, and even nuclear material. After more than 45 years, two Carvairs were in 2008 still in service.

This comprehensive history of the ATL-98 Carvair, begins with corporate histories and profiles of key players, including William Patterson, Donald Douglas, and Freddie Laker. Four chapters illustrate the evolution of the car-ferry as a viable aircraft, the history of Aviation Traders, engineering details incorporated into the Carvair's production, and major Carvair operators. Chapters on each of the fleet's 21 planes provide individual histories and anecdotes. Seven appendices provide several kinds of data and the book is fully indexed.

DC-8 and the Flying Tiger Line

This unique book tells the story of the Douglas DC-8 jetliner in the service of air cargo giant Flying Tiger Line, with:
- a detailed individual airframe history of every one of the forty-seven DC-8s that flew for the airline;
- pilot s recollections of their time on type;
- a wealth of photographic, technical and promotional material;
- and a pair of epic historical essays.

The first essay covers the history of the airline, of American Volunteer Group pilots in China in World War 2, evolving into a fly-by-night cargo outfit in the propliner era, growing in size and sophistication until the Flying Tiger Line was a global brand in air cargo in the golden days of the jet age.

The other essay covers the DC-8 from the beginning of the Douglas story in the time of the Wright Bros right up to the last active DC-8 of today including an in-depth look at NASA s DC-8-72 flying laboratory.

Aviation journalist Charles Kennedy (Airliner World, Aviation News, Airways) and historian Guy Van Herbruggen (who led the project to rescue and restore the original Flying Tigers DC-8 simulator) have created an essential addition to every aviation enthusiasts bookshelf.

Douglas DC-9 (Legends of Flight)

With their unmistakable silhouette, the Douglas DC-9 family of twin-engine passenger jets was a familiar sight on many of the world's airfields well into the 1990s.
Douglas initiated development of the DC-9 at the beginning of the 1960s and, in doing so, developed an entirely new market - the short-range jet airliner. The DC-9 became an instant bestseller for Douglas.
To this day, the DC-9, and its MD-80 and -90 variants, are among the most successful passenger airliners ever produced, with nearly 1,000 examples being produced from 1965 to 1982.

In this book you will learn everything from the first designs to its gradual elimination from the market by more-modern designs from Airbus and Boeing. The history of the DC-9's design, development, and operational use is presented in detail in this book, as is its use by many of the world's most famous airlines, including Delta, Eastern, TWA, USAir, Air Canada, Swissair, Finnair, KLM, and Qantas.
Technical specifications for the DC-9 and its variants, as well as period photographs, bring to life the fascinating history of Douglas's most successful commercial jet airliner.
