Con la firma del Tratado de Estado de Austria el 15 de mayo de 1955 comenzó la reconstrucción de la Fuerza Aérea austriaca. El 15 de julio de 1955 se estableció la Oficina de Defensa Nacional, y el 13 de septiembre se creó el Departamento III/L (Aire) bajo la dirección del Mayor Josef Bizek.

El nacimiento oficial de la nueva Fuerza Aérea fue el 9 de diciembre de 1955, cuando el Teniente Coronel de Policía Gustav Hauck despegó a las 10: 01 con el Jakowlew Jak-18 (3A-AB), un regalo de la Unión Soviética, desde la base aérea de Brumowski en Langenlebarn. Fue el primer vuelo de un avión con marcas austríacas tras más de 17 años.
El equipamiento inicial del Ejército Federal era modesto, compuesto principalmente por regalos y material de segunda mano adquirido a bajo costo de las antiguas potencias ocupantes.

Die k. u. k. Luftfahrtruppen - Zur Geschichte von Österreich-Ungarns 'Luftakrobaten'

Although the Danube Monarchy had been one of the leading states in the field of aviation in the years before 1914, it was only possible to send air companies into the field with great effort when the war broke out. Because the aircraft available was not suitable for war, aircraft and engines had to be bought in a hurry from the allied Germany.
In 1915, it was finally possible to boost aircraft production and pilot training. Towards the end of the war, however, the general economic exhaustion of Austria-Hungary and the superiority of the Allies became noticeable.

In this book, Walter Blasi and Bernhard Tötschinger create a unique monument to the Imperial and Royal Aviation Corps. They outline the history of these young troops and have compiled a large number of previously unpublished images. The result is a fascinating depiction of this previously barely documented part of Austro-Hungarian military history.
