Westland Lysander jest jednym z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych brytyjskich samolotów. Westland Whirlwind Mk. I

The Westland Whirlwind belongs to that category of aircraft which entered production but failed to live up to their designers' expectations. Its unreliable engines can be seen as a major reason for this but it only serves to hide other serious problems.
Indeed, even with better engines the results would probably have been the same, as the concept of a twin-engined fighter aircraft capable of meeting single-engined fighters escorting bombers formations on an equal footing was fallacious, as combat in WW2 was soon to prove.

Lysander - L'avion qui venait de Londres

Durant la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale, un des avions le plus surprenant de la RAF fut sans conteste le "Lysander".
Le Lysander fut employé et connut la notoriété, par le transport clandestin d'agents spéciaux entre la France et l'Angleterre. Mais qui se souvient de son utilisation comme avion de reconnaissance, voire d'appui tactique en Europe comme en Asie ?

Le "Lysander", premier produit connu de la firme "Westland". Hommes, femmes, enfants du Royaume-Uni en guerre allaient bientôt être étonnés tant ses formes étaient caractéristiques. Aujourd'hui encore, l'amateur le moins averti est à même, en le montrant du doigt, de reconnaître un Lysander et d'identifier un "Lyzzie" (nom donné avec affection par ceux qui l'avaient piloté et appris à le respecter autant qu'à l'aimer)

Résultat d'un concept déjà dépassé au moment de son développement, il échoua totalement dans le rôle pour lequel il avait été réalisé initialement. Ainsi, une fois les combats engagés sur le territoire européen, allait-il payer un lourd tribut en opérations.
Ceci étant, il servit finalement à d'autres tâches où, d'ailleurs, il excella. Il devint bientôt très populaire dans la France occupée, sous le nom de "'Avion qui vient de Londres". A ce titre, le Lysander trouva, entre les mains d'hommes de courage et d'audace, sa vraie place au sein de la R.A.F.
