Arado Ar 196 Units in Combat (Osprey)

Beating its biplane rivals in a 1936 Reich Air Ministry design competition, the Arado Ar 196 provided the Kriegsmarine with possibly the best shipborne reconnaissance seaplane of World War II. Replacing the Heinkel He 60 biplane as the standard catapult-launched floatplane embarked on the Kriegsmarine's capital ships, the Ar 196 flew an assortment of combat missions during World War II, including coastal patrol, submarine hunting, light bombing, general reconnaissance and convoy escort sorties.

The first vessel to take its Ar 196A-1s to sea was the pocket battleship Graf Spee, which embarked two in the autumn of 1939. The battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz could carry six Arados each, the battlecruisers Gneisenau and Scharnhorst four and smaller pocket battleships and cruisers two.

Shore-based aircraft were also operated from coastal ports on the Channel, Baltic, North Sea and Bay of Biscay coasts, as well as in the Balkans and Mediterranean.

Arado Ar 234 Bomber and Reconnaissance Units (Osprey)

When the revolutionary twin jet-powered Arado Ar 234 first appeared in the skies over north-west Europe in the summer of 1944, it represented the state-of-the-art in terms of aeronautical and technical development. The Ar 234 was a formidable aircraft - powered by Jumo 004Bs, the same engine used by the Me 262, and with a maximum speed of 735 km/h and range of 1600 km/h, it was very difficult for the Allies to 'catch'. Here was a machine that with its superior speed could operate with impunity as both a bomber and in the reconnaissancerole.

As such, the aircraft became the world's first reconnaissance jet, undertaking secret, high-speed, high-altitude observation missions for the German High Command over the Allied beachheads in Normandy and other Allied strongholds. Astonishingly, in September 1944 and as late as 1945, lone Ar 234s conducted reconnaissance flights over British ports and theMediterranean.

The aircraft was equally efficient as a jet bomber - although the Ar 234B-2 bomber variant carried no defensive gun armament, it was able to deliver 1000 kg of bombs at high-speed and at either low- or high-level with considerable and devastating accuracy.

Arado Ar 234 C - An Illustrated History

The Arado Ar 234C was the world's first four turbojet-powered flying machine to be built in series. But it was more than that, and its design and testing raised great hopes among the Nazis. The Ar 234 was nothing less than Adolf Hitler's long awaited "Engländer Bomber". Powered by four BMW 003A-1 turbojet engines, with a combined thrust of 7,040 pounds, early test results indicated that it could reach speeds of over 550 mph even when loaded with tons of high explosive bombs and/or guided missiles.

Założone w 1925 roku w Warnemünde zakłady Arado-Flugzeugwerke od początku produkowały samoloty cywilne, a także opracowywały prototypy dla tajnego programu zbrojeniowego Reichswehry.
Od 1933 roku rozpoczęto licencyjną produkcję samolotów wojskowych, równolegle z własnymi konstrukcjami. Do najbardziej znanych należą samoloty szkolne Ar 66 i Ar 96, wodnosamolot katapultowy Ar 196 oraz rekordowy samolot sportowy Ar 79.

Arado - seit 1925 (Typenkompass)

The manufacturer Arado, founded in 1925, initially only built civilian aircraft, but soon began to design military models. At first these had to be tested in secret, but this resulted in the first series fighters of the new air force and the Ar 196 became the most-built German floatplane.
During the war, Arado made some groundbreaking developments that were technically far ahead of their time. These included the fastest twin-engine fighter aircraft of its time, the Ar 240, the world's first real combat zone transporter, the Ar 232, and the world's first jet bomber, the Ar 234.

In this book each type is presented with a photo, a historical description and a technical sheet.

Adler über See - Bordflugzeug und Küstenaufklärer Arado Ar 196

The Arado Ar 196 was the last naval combat aircraft built in Germany. Intended as a catapult-capable aircraft for use on warships, the sturdy low-wing aircraft also proved its worth as a coastal reconnaissance aircraft. Although the model was already technologically outdated at the start of World War II, over 500 examples were manufactured by 1944, some of which flew into the 1960s.

The German Navy began planning an aircraft in 1928 and decided in favour of the Heinkel He 60 biplane. The search for a more modern successor proved difficult; various designs were not satisfactory. In 1936, the aircraft was put out to tender again and the contract was finally awarded to the Arado company, whose Arado Ar 196 design was convincing.

Using mostly unpublished photographs, the reader follows the development of the machine from V-model to the series produced in series, and from there into use and loss.
A special chapter shows all known whereabouts and presents surviving machines. Numerous sketches and drawings provide valuable information for serious model makers.

Das große Bordflugzeug - Arado Ar 95 und Heinkel He 114

In the Weimar Republic, pioneering ship designs were developed for the Reichsmarine, which had catapults for the use of on-board reconnaissance aircraft. After the Heinkel He 60 biplane, the Arado Ar 95 and the Heinkel He 114, which were based on the tender for a large on-board aircraft, were used for a short time.
Because both of these were disappointing, the Reich Air Ministry put out a tender for the "on-board aircraft 1936" and finally procured the Arado Ar 196.

The monographs on the He 60 and the Ar 196 published by Helios-Verlag are internationally regarded as standard works. The present monograph on the Ar 95 and He 114 models concludes the development history of the shipboard aircraft in the Kriegsmarine with largely unpublished images and rare technical drawings.
