Die elegante Maschine erschloss den Airlines neue Märkte und war über mehrere Jahrzehnte auf fast allen Flughäfen der Welt anzutreffen. Auch die Lufthansa setzte diese Maschine ab 1964 mit über 50 Stück ein. Aufgrund gestiegener Lärmschutzauflagen sowie des nicht mehr zeitgemässen Dreimann-Cockpits und Verbrauchs ist die 727 heute aus dem Passagier-Linienbetrieb nahezu verschwunden.
