Boeing in Photographs : A Century of Flight

Founded in 1916 by William E. Boeing, a wealthy timber merchant, the mighty Boeing Company's 100-year history spans decades of rich achievement and technological development.
Beginning with the manufacture of seaplanes, fighters and, from the 1930s onwards, huge bombers, Boeing pioneered innovative transports - gigantic airliners, missiles, rockets and most recently vehicles for space exploration and satellites.

Constantly evolving, Boeing set out to develop an entirely new jet transport, and in 1954 the innovative 707 appeared. The 727 and 737 airliners quickly followed and in 1969 the revolutionary 747. By 1975 the 'Jumbo Jet' was being produced in seven different models and new versions continue to be developed to this day.

Aviation author and historian Martin Bowman marks the centenary of Boeing's incorporation in July 1916 with this glorious photographic history, detailing the story of the company from its humble side-project beginnings to its ascent into being one of the world's largest aircraft manufacturers.

Boeing Field

Even before there were runways, the area south of the city of Seattle was Washington's aviation hub. Charles Hamilton, a daredevil dubbed "Crazy Man of the Air," became the first flyer in the state when he coaxed his Curtiss biplane into the sky over Meadows Racetrack in 1910. He promptly crashed.

With the help of William Boeing and his growing aviation company, Boeing Field opened in 1928. In those early days, brave air travelers could hitch a ride along with bags of mail in cold, noisy biplanes. Bigger, better aircraft soon followed, but wartime intervened.
Thousands of Flying Fortress bombers emerged from Boeing's Plant 2 at the edge of the airfield and winged off to war. In the years after, Boeing Field served a dazzling array of winged machines - from the smallest Piper Cub to Air Force One.

Die Boeing C-17 Globemaster III ist der modernste schwere Militärtransporter des Westens. Sie verfügt über Kurzstart- und -landeeigenschaften und kann von unbefestigten Pisten aus operieren. Die im Flug einsetzbare Schubumkehr erlaubt steile Landeanflüge, um die Gefahr von Feindbeschuss zu minimieren. Zudem kann sie aus jeder Höhe im Flug Lasten und Soldaten absetzen.

All das macht sie enorm vielseitig. Seit Indienststellung bei der US Air Force 1993 hat sich die Maschine in nahezu jedem Konflikt mit US-Beteiligung bewährt - zuletzt im August 2021, als mit einem einzigen Flugzeug 823 Personen aus Kabul evakuiert wurden.
