Phantom in the Cold War : RAF Wildenrath 1977 - 1992

The McDonnell Douglas F4 Phantom was a true multi-role combat aircraft. Introduced into the RAF in 1968, it was employed in ground attack, air reconnaissance and air defence roles. Later, with the arrival of the Jaguar in the early 1970s, it changed over to air defence.

USAF McDonnell-Douglas F-4 Phantom II (Osprey)

De F-4 Phantom II was in veel opzichten het meest succesvolle, veelzijdige en meest gebruikte gevechtsvliegtuig van het naoorlogse tijdperk en werd na zijn spectaculaire introductie door de Amerikaanse marine snel door de USAF in gebruik genomen.
De introductie ervan bij de squadrons van de Amerikaanse luchtmacht kwam net op tijd voor het Vietnamconflict, waar de F-4C's van de USAF de MiG-bestrijdingstaken overnamen van de F-100 Super Sabre. Hoewel de F-4 nooit bedoeld was als een jachtvliegtuig voor luchtgevechten met lichte, wendbare, bewapende MiG's, was het verantwoordelijk voor de vernietiging van 109 MiG's in luchtgevechten.

Aan het einde van hun carrière werden veel van de 3.380 overgebleven 'landgebaseerde' Phantoms omgebouwd tot doeldrones voor trainingsdoeleinden.
