Landy Love - since 1948 (English Edition)

Could Maurice Wilks and his team of developers in Solihull have known in 1948, what their invention would mean for automotive humanity? Since then, the Land Rover has not only driven all over Great Britain, on endless dirt roads, and through deserts, mud and snow - no, it has also found a place deep in the hearts of its owners.

This book has collected some of the best Landy stories, which could hardly be more different from each other. And even though - or perhaps even because - the iconic vehicle is no longer officially in production, the spirit of the Land Rover Defender will live on. Not least because of the fans that drive it, own it and love it.

Land Rover - Le vetture che hanno fatto la storia

The Land Rover was conceived by the Rover Company back in 1948 as an answer to the famous Willys Jeep, which was used throughout the Second World War. The Land Rover soon became an institution and an ambassadress of the British automotive industry across the world.
Almost immediately, the potential of this small and agile multi-use vehicle was recognised and the groups of its users spread to the military, fire services, fuel companies; in practice to anyone who needed to go off-road.
It didn't take long for the success of the Land Rover to develop and diversify into numerous versions, bringing to life an entire family of variants, after which many body builders created even more special series, often single examples.

Land Rover was able to save itself from the serious crisis that hit the British motor industry in the '70s, evolving through to today with the Range Rover and the Defender family vehicles. There was no way such important vehicles couldn't be in our series on the "Vehicles that made History" in a book that covers the genesis of the Willys Jeep to the various series that have spelt out the production of this legendary vehicle, including all the military versions and those built overseas.

Land Rover Emergency Vehicles

An historic and nostalgic look at the role of the Land Rover in the emergency services over the last 70 years. Land Rover products have been used by the emergency services almost from the moment the first model left the factory in 1948.
The agility and size of these vehicles made them an immediate hit with fire services, where they initially became popular as factory fire tenders.

Police forces were also attracted by the cross-country ability and versatility of Land Rovers, especially outside Britain, and, when long-wheelbase models provided extra space, they also became favourites for ambulance conversions.
Some emergency-service conversions required very little adaptation, and were carried out in the workshops of the end-users. Others - such as six-wheel Range Rover fire tenders - required major alterations from the factory-standard vehicle. Meanwhile, specialist companies developed dedicated ambulance and fire tender bodywork, creating a fascinating variety of body types.

The vehicles featured in this book illustrate the versatility and adaptability of Land Rovers and their more modern SUV siblings.
This book will interest Land Rover enthusiasts and emergency-vehicle enthusiasts alike, with evocative photographs that illustrate both historic vehicles and more recent vehicles in action.

British Leyland - The Cars, 1968-1986

In 1968, British Leyland brought together most of Britain's motor manufacturers, with the intention of creating a robust unified group that could equal the strength of the big European conglomerates. But this was not to be.

There have been many books about the politics and the business activities of British Leyland, but "British Leyland - The Cars, 1968 - 1986" looks deliberately at the cars that came from the company, both the models it inherited and it created.

The eighteen years of the corporation's existence saw a confusing multitude of different car types, but this book resolves these confusions, clarifying who built what, and when.
The book takes 1986 as its cut-off point because this was the year that the old British Leyland ceased to exist and what was left of the car and light commercial business was renamed the Rover Group.

Rover V8 - The Story of the Engine

Tells the fascinating story of the engine that created a legend in its own lifetime. Starting life as a General Motors design in 1961, but withdrawn three years later in favour of cheaper technology, it reached Rover by chance in the mid-1960s.
Few other British companies then had V8 engines in production, and Rover immediately gained a special status when the V8 entered UK production during 1967.

This was an extraordinarily compact design and also extraordinarily light, thanks to its all-aluminium alloy construction. It was not a temperamental high-performance engine, but had a well-proven and simple architecture that made it both reliable and easy to work on.

Small wonder, then, that the Rover V8 was bought by sports car makers who needed a light, compact and powerful engine. Small wonder that Rover kept it in production for so long, developing multiple different sizes and versions.

Small wonder that the engine is still revered by Rover and Land Rover enthusiasts today, or that its popularity as an aftermarket conversion has ensured that it remains in small-volume production, half a century after entering production in the UK.

Features:
- Origins of the engine at General Motors
- Purchase and adaptation of the engine by Rover
- Every production version covered
- Power and torque comparison figures
- Development of the engine by Rover, 1967-2004
- Carburettor and fuel injection types
- Celebrates 50 years of the Rover V8
- An up-to-date history of Rover V8 engine production.
