Land Rover - Series I, II, III & Defender

Land Rover Series I, II & IIA (1948-1971) - Essential Buyer's Guide

The Series Land Rover was conceived as a utility vehicle for farmers; one that could be repaired and maintained with the minimum of specialist tools. The early models rapidly built up a worldwide reputation for rugged cross country capability that led to them not only to great success in the agricultural industry, but also to being adopted by police forces in at least 37 countries.
The book describes the step by step development of the marque, so you are aware of each model's individual strengths and weaknesses. It covers the Land Rover Series I, II & II A (1948-1971).

Choose your preferred model, then be professionally guided through important aspects of the retail market, with clear instructions on where and how to check for specific potential problems before you buy. Evaluate and score your potential purchase against an exhaustive checklist, learn how to test-drive it with confidence, and be forewarned about running and maintenance costs.
The book also details the Land Rover community from clubs to specialists.

With over 100 colour photographs carefully integrated into the concise and informative text, this really is like having a marque expert beside you when viewing a potential purchase.

Land Rover Series II / II A

After ten years of production, the Solihull-manufactured Land Rover was established as a useful 4x4, popular with farmers, armies and those whose employment took them far from the beaten track. Following a redesign, the Series II Land Rover was launched in April 1958. It was available in two wheelbases, with a choice of diesel or petrol engines and a variety of body styles including pick-ups and soft-tops and, aimed more at travel and people-carrying rather than agricultural work, short and long wheelbase Station Wagons.

The main difference that identified the new Land Rovers at a glance was the radius pressed into the aluminium bodywork below the galvanised waist rail. This changed the Land Rover's appearance considerably and was a shape that endured until 2016 in the Land Rover Defender. The Series IIA was introduced in 1961 and through a production run that last until 1971, a succession of upgrades, mainly detail and cosmetic changes, followed.

Land Rover production and sales peaked at the end of the sixties when more than 55,000 Land Rovers were sold in one year. This figure partially accounts for the popularity of the Series II/IIA Land Rovers but it is generally accepted that these were some of the strongest Land Rovers ever built - the transmission was particularly noted - and it was these that formed the basis for specialist applications such as fire tenders, mobile cinemas, military models, ambulances, campers and those used to drive winches, pumps and agricultural machinery.
Further specialisation came in the form of the Series IIA and IIB Forward Control and 'bonneted' One Ton models.

Factory-Original Land Rover Series I, 80-inch models

It was back in 1996 that James Taylor's book Original Land Rover Series I was first published, and it has been in print and in constant demand ever since.
In recent years James has been engaged in further research and the gathering of new information for a much larger and more detailed work about the Series I, so this substantial new book is dedicated to the 80-inch models alone, with the Series Is on other wheelbases to come in a later volume. The aim remains the same as it was for the 1996 book: to provide a detailed guide to correct factory specification and equipment for all models.

Land Rover Series I, II, IIa & III - With over 350 illustrations from sales brochures and advertising

There has rarely been a British success story like the Land Rover. Developed in a short time and on a small budget, it was launched in 1948 and having passed though many revisions is still a world leader today.
The Series Land Rovers detailed in this book take us from the beginning to 1985, and the many surviving examples, supported by a comprehensive parts and restoration industry, are seeing a solid increase in values.

Here James Taylor, the premier historian of the marque, provides a detailed study of the Land Rover's evolution through the period and the variants and special-purpose versions that were produced.
Uniquely, it is the manufacturer's own sales brochures and advertising that supply the illustrations, which number some 350 and serve not only to depict the vehicles but also to re-create the atmosphere of the times when they were made.

Land Rover Series One 1948-58

The Land Rover was a post-war marvel, a vehicle that helped change the face of motoring on and off-road around the world. From its humble beginnings as a temporary stopgap intended to get the Rover Company up and running again in a workshop at Solihull, it soon endeared itself to those who ended to travel off the beaten track anywhere in the world. Its success can be gauged by the fact that in only six years, more than 100,000 were made.

The vehicle evolved quickly in its first ten years to the extent that the vehicles known as Series One Land Rovers include five wheelbases and three engines and it became a permanent part of the Rover Company's range of vehicles. Owners and drivers soon included royalty, farmers, explorers and soldiers and the Land Rover became a ubiquitous part of the British landscape especially in rural areas.

Inevitably the Land Rovers that started the legend became cherished and sought-after classics to the extent that the Series One owners' club is now the largest Land Rover club in the world. They are owned by people as diverse as the tasks Land Rovers are expected to perform and this book reflects that. Photographed in recent years, it offers a snapshot of these cherished automobiles, their owners and the events they attend.

Original Land Rover Series 1 - The Restorer's Guide to Civil & Military Models 1948-58

The completely authentic specification now sought by the most discerning enthusiasts causes many problems with early Land-Rovers. Many of these vehicles have been altered over the years with updated and incorrect parts simply to keep them in service.
During manufacture, too, Rover found itself with such a pioneering yet super-successful product that a bewildering number of specification changes were introduced during the 10-year production run, giving any Series I Land-Rover numerous distinctive features according to model and period.

To provide answers to the questions Land-Rover enthusiasts are always asking, immense effort has gone into making this book as comprehensive as possible. Its meticulous author pinpoints many hotly debated modifications as he dissects the fascinating evolution of the Series 1.

Much detective work has gone into locating the right Land-Rovers for photography, so that correct details are shown from superb vehicles that have been preserved in original condition or restored with close attention to authenticity.

This is the ultimate guide to the Land Rover Series I. The intensively researched text is packed with a level of specification detail that goes far beyond any book previously published about early Land-Rovers.
More than 200 specially commissioned colour photographs of 25 different vehicles - including military versions and fire engines - reveal the details that distinguish one model from another. Indispensable for all owners, restorers, buyers and enthusiasts.
