Tar Heel Treasures: Richard J. Corbitt and the Corbitt Motor Truck
NEW
This book tells the story of R.J. Corbitt and the Corbitt motor truck, two important but often overlooked parts of North Carolina's industrial heritage. From 1899 to 1952, Corbitt worked to add transportation and trucks to the state's well-known "three Ts" - tobacco, textiles, and timber.
R.J. Corbitt was an innovative and visionary leader who created companies that built buggies, wagons, automobiles, trailers, farm tractors, and above all, distinctive motor trucks carrying his name. He understood the central role that different vehicles could play in the economic growth of North Carolina, the South, and the nation.
Corbitt's story began in 1899 with the founding of the Corbitt Buggy Co., followed by the production of automobiles in 1911 and the first heavy-duty truck in 1913. Over the next four decades, the company's history included ambitious projects such as a proposed merger with Sterling Motor Truck Co. and recognition during World War II with the "E Award" for excellence in production.
Richly illustrated, this book preserves the legacy of Corbitt's contributions to American transportation history.
