Jeep - Le tout-terrain de la liberté

Juin 1944: la Jeep débarque sur le continent. Sa silhouette devient rapidement familière et emblématique des armées de la libération. Dans une envolée, un journaliste britannique écrit ainsi: "pour les français, la Jeep, c'est la liberté sur roues."
Livrée à tous les Alliés, elle enchante ses utilisateurs, qu'ils soient anglais, canadiens, français libres ou russes. Ces derniers la disent "Zamechatelno", c'est à dire extraordinaire, fantastique.

Le conflit achevé, la Jeep entame une nouvelle carrière. Elle équipe ede nombreuses armées, et se décline dans de multiples versions destinées aussi aux marchés civils. Copiée ou construite sous licence, elle a donné naissance à un concept et, plus de soixante ans après son apparition, le temps et les modes ne semblent pas avoir prise sur elle. Véhicule de légende, la Jeep est désormais entrée dans l'histoire.

Jeep militaires - depuis 1940 (Willys MB, Ford GPW et Hotchkiss M201)

Malgré son association très fréquente avec la société Willys-Overland américaine, la Jeep fut en réalité étudiée par une équipe travaillant pour le compte d'American Bantam en réponse à une demande de l'US Quartermaster Corps formulée en 1940. Face aux manigances d'une très forte opposition politique, Bantam perdit le marché en faveur de Willys-Overland et de Ford qui finirent par produire environ 640 000 exemplaires de ce qui reste probablement le véhicule le plus reconnaissable du monde, tandis que Hotchkiss produisait en France, bien après la guerre, 28 000 autres Jeep.

Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la Jeep accompagna toutes les armées alliées sur tous les fronts et les militaires des deux camps reconnurent ses qualités de véhicule fiable et passe-partout.
Après la fin de la guerre, des milliers de Jeep furent allouées aux armées des pays européens récemment libérés. D'autres furent "civilisées", mais peu à peu ces véhicules commencèrent à passer aux mains des collectionneurs.
