Know Your Classic Tractors

Many popular tractors from the late 1960s to 1980s have become classics on Britain's farms. This period saw a huge rise in the power and comfort of tractors, paving the way for today's high-tech farm machinery.
In the mid-1960s the classic period of tractor production arrived with ranges such as Ford's 1000 series and the Massey Ferguson 135. Tractors were now true workhorses with more power, more reliability, and greater driver comfort. Their drivers fell in love with them and many are continuing to work today.

Inside this updated second edition, author Chris Lockwood has chosen 41 examples to indicate the range of machines that can be called classics. They are all in their working clothes!
Alphabetically, they range from Belarus to Zetor, with several examples from each of the major manufacturers such as Case, International, and John Deere. Altogether, some 26 famous names are included.

Chris gives each tractor a full-page photograph, opposite which his text provides some technical details of the machines, as well as background about the company and the tractor range. This is ideal for novice enthusiasts who will learn something about David Brown, Doe, Leyland, and County, as well as more exotic marques such as Same and Steiger.

Seventy Years of Farm Tractors 1930-2000

By the end of the twentieth century there were some half-million tractors on British farms - more machines than people to drive them. Brian Bell's encyclopaedic book traces the evolution of the farm tractor from the days of starting handle and pan seat to current 4-wheel drive machines with air-conditioned cabs and computer management systems. He deals in particular with developments of the classic period from the 1950s to the 1990s.

The book is arranged alphabetically by manufacturer from Allis-Chalmers to Zetor, one hundred marques in total. These are all machines to be found on British farms irrespective of their country of manufacture.
Brian runs concisely through the histories of the companies and their major models, illustrated with a wealth of photographs and extracts from sales literature.
He adds some special features on items such as hydraulic systems and cold-starting aids. He includes a glossary and full index.

This book replaces the author's earlier, successful, Fifty Years of Farm Tractors.
Many of the photographs are new and the text has been brought up to date to include developments of the early twenty-first century.

Tractor Legends

This book covers the tractor models that have stood out, from the early twentieth century to the present day, either because of their innovative design and engineering features or because they set new standards in reliability and popularity.

Beginning with the background to the development of the first tractor, Jonathan Whitlam takes us on a fascinating journey through a variety of tractor types, both large and small, and their stand-out features.
This includes:
- the Fordson F, the first mass produced tractor which set the pattern for future tractor design;
- the Field Marshall, which introduced diesel engines for tractors;
- the Ferguson TE20 with its novel three-point linkage;
- the Massey Ferguson 35 and later 135, which stand out for sheer popularity;
- and the John Deere 3640, with its powerful six-cylinder engine and advanced cab.

The Tractor Factor : The World's Rarest Classic Farm Tractors

Vintage farm tractors are revered throughout the world as the source of mechanical labor, allowing the revolution of farming to take place in the twentieth century.
Some of the most interesting tractors are also the rarest, since they were produced in very small quantities. These include one-of-a-kind modified models; very, very old machines; and models produced by one of the many companies that made tractors for only a short time.

The "Tractor Factor" is a richly illustrated book that reveals what makes a tractor collectible, showcases the rarest models, gives a history of the marque, and details specific finds.
Robert N. Pripps, a leading tractor historian, covers models from the United States, the UK, Germany, Holland, France, and other countries. Pripps' expertise, paired with the stunning photography of Ralph W. Sanders and Andrew Morland, makes this a book no fan of these paradigm-changing machines will want to miss!

The Tractor Story

The book covers over 100 years of tractor development and features more than 100 different tractors. The first steam engines on wheels which used belts to drive farm machinery developed into traction engines, used on farms by pulling a plough on cables between two engines. In the 20th century, stationary internal combustion engines, such as the Clutterbuck, began to be put on wheels and moved around a farm to drive threshing machines by belt.

Dozens of small companies grew up around the world following their own lines of development. Most lasted only a short time. Firms like Allis-Chalmers, Benz, Lloyd, Jelbart, Glasgow, Fordson, Bates and Hart-Parr are famous names which have faded away or been taken over.

A few companies, such as Case and Massey, started in the middle of the 19th century and continue today on a global scale. John Deere started making ploughs in 1837 and is now the largest manufacturer in the world. Some developments have caused a giant leap forward: the use of rubber pneumatic tyres rather than metal wheels; turbo-charged diesel engines and the hydraulic three-point hitch system designed by Ferguson, which is still used today in some form on most modern machines.

All are photographed here, many in action and in different countries.
