Locomotives of the Eastern United States

The Eastern United States offers some of the best scenery in the country, and some of the most demanding for the railways. They must traverse treacherous mountain grades, making each trip a challenge to the crew and the equipment.
Since the early days of rail transportation, the railways have used the latest steam and diesel locomotives to move freight and passengers over this topography.

The trains of today haul an incredible amount of tonnage across this terrain and the modern motive power in use is up to the task. Contemporary engines built by EMD and GE with up to 4,000 hp per unit are used to haul unit coal, intermodal and general freight across these routes.

Focusing primarily on the Norfolk Southern Railway, photographer Christopher Esposito looks at these great modern machines as they navigate through some of the most iconic locations on the railways of the Eastern United States.

The Pennsylvania Railroad experimented with different builders and type of locomotives until they found the best design. Highlighted are various classes of steam locomotives like the K4 4-6-2, S1 6-4-4-6 Duplex and T1 4-4-4-4 Duplex, diesel's like Alco RS models, Baldwin end-cab switchers, Fairbanks-Morse Train Master, Electro-Motive GP series, F-units and E-units, along with the legendary bi-directional & center-cab GG1 electric locomotive.

Also featured with this collection of previously unpublished archival photos are a system map, timetables, advertising and locomotive designs by well known industrial designer Raymond Loewy.

Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Strasburg in rural Lancaster County, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania stands as a testament to the state's extensive railroad legacy. For fifty years, this expansive complex has meticulously preserved and presented the state's rich railroad history.

CSX Transportation

CSX Transportation came to being in 1980 with the merger of Seaboard Coast Lines and the Chessie System, producing a system of over 21,000 route miles in twenty-four states, with incursions into two Canadian provinces.
The system runs from Beauharnois, Quebec in the north to Miami, Florida in the south and covers much of the industrial north-east of the States, as well as the more rural areas that lead to the south-east of the country.
Most of the locomotive fleet are now painted in a dark blue and yellow paint scheme, with earlier grey and blue schemes now almost extinct.

Included in the book are images mainly from the southern division of the company's operations. These feature all manner of freight operations, along with areas with trackage rights, short line railroads fed by the CSX system and Amtrak, and commuter rail operations that use CSX tracks and assets.
