C'est en remportant haut la main la fameuse course de côte du mont Fuji en 1955 que Yamaha fit une entrée fracassante dans le monde de la moto. Depuis ce premier succès, la firme d'Hamamatsu a connu une ascension fulgurante, accumulant un nombre incalculable de victoires sur tous les circuits du monde et ponctuant son parcours d'éclatants succès commerciaux avec des must comme les célèbres modèles YA-1, DT125MX et XT500 ou, plus récemment, les fameuses V-Max ou 600 Fazer.

Toujours au sommet de son art, affichant sans faiblir une farouche volonté de vaincre, la marque aux trois diapasons fascine pour l'excellence de son engineering autant que pour l'image de grand compétiteur qu'elle s'est façonnée aux côtés de pilotes aussi talentueux que Phil Read, Giacomo Agostini, Jarno Saarinen, Kenny Roberts ou encore Wayne Rainey.

Yamaha Zweitakt: Von der YA1 bis zur RD 500 und DT 400 - Strassenmaschinen, Enduros, Mokicks seit 1955

In den 1950er Jahren wurde der Motorradmarkt noch von Deutschen, Italienern und Engländern beherrscht. NSU war der grösste Motorrad-hersteller der Welt, DKW fuhr Umsatzrekorde ein, und BMW versorgte das Volk mit robusten Viertakt-Modellen.
Doch dann kamen die Japaner. Yamaha stellte 1955 das erste Modell vor, die einzylindrige YA1 mit Zweitaktmotor und 125 cm³ Hubraum. Handelte es sich anfangs noch um gut gemachte Kopien deutscher Produkte, änderte sich das radikal 1959 mit der Präsentation der YDS1: Mit zwei Zylindern, 250 cm³ und 20 PS sowie fortschrittlichem Design war die Japanerin eine echte Sportskanone.

Als die Nachfolgemodelle und vor allem die legendären RD-Typen mit 250, 350 und 400 cm³ ab 1964 auch in Deutschland angeboten wurden, gab es für die Fans kein Halten mehr. Das Motorrad wurde zum Spassmobil, die giftigen Zweitaktmotoren ermöglichten bis dahin unbekannte Fahrleistungen.

Dieses grossformatige Buch zeichnet präzise die Geschichte der quirligen Yamaha-Zweitaktmodelle seit 1955 nach. Historische Mopeds, Mokicks, Leichtkrafträder, 125er und grössere Modelle bis hin zur flüssiggekühlten Rakete RD 500 (vier Zylinder, 88 PS, 225 km/h) und zu den überaus erfolgreichen, geländetauglichen Enduro-Modellen werden ausführlich beschrieben.

Zeitzeugen erinnern sich an die Jahre, als das Motorradgeschäft einen goldenen Boden hatte.
