British Paddle Steamers: The Twilight Years

Resumé - In the aftermath of the Second World War, paddle steamers in Britain initially did rather well, with four new ones built between 1946 and 1953 and about sixty still in service nationwide.
By 1955 this tide of optimism had turned and from then on it was downhill all the way. In almost every subsequent year, one or two paddle steamers were withdrawn and sometimes it was as many as five or six.

By the late 1960s only a handful remained operational and, of these, all except one owed their continued existence to their usefulness as people-movers on the Clyde, Humber or Solent, rather than for excursions.
Some, like Freshwater, Princess Elizabeth, Consuland Jeanie Deans, enjoyed temporary new careers on services previously abandoned by their longstanding owners. A few like Medway Queen, Compton Castleand Caledoniabecame nightclubs, cafes or bars. Most ended up under the scrap-dealer's torch.

In this book author John Megoran, who returned the paddle steamer Kingswear Castle to service on the Medway and Thames in 1985, and was her captain and manager for nearly thirty years, explores all the excursion paddle steamers withdrawn from 1955, as well as examining the sort of cruises they ran and what happened to them in their twilight years.

Passenger Steamers of the River Conwy - Serving the Famous Trefriw Spa

Resumé - With the blossoming of Victorian tourism in the 1840s, the beautiful Conwy Valley in North Wales, with its healthy climate and picturesque scenery, became immensely popular.

The rediscovery and development of an ancient chalybeate mineral well led to the transformation of the quiet village of Trefriw into a major spa resort to which health-seeking visitors flocked, travelling on board a unique fleet of charming pleasure steamers, which quickly established themselves as an essential part of the Welsh tourist experience.

This absorbing book traces the colourful but largely forgotten chapter in British maritime and social history: the rise and fall of both the steamer trade on the River Conwy and of Trefriw as a fashionable spa.

The Port of Dover Through Time

Resumé - The Port of Dover is Europe's busiest ferry port and is situated in south-east England. The port is owned and operated by the Dover Harbour Board, which was formed by Royal Charter in 1606 by King James I.

P&O Ferries and DFDS Seaways operate services to Calais and Dunkirk from the Eastern Docks. These docks were used for ship-breaking during the First World War and finally closed in 1964.
In 1966 over 600,000 vehicles travelled through Dover's Eastern Docks to France and Belgium.

The Western Docks are formed by the western arm of the harbour and include Admiralty Pier and other port facilities. They were used as a terminal for the Golden Arrow and other cross-channel train services.

The railway station closed in 1994 and this area of the port was used for cross-channel hovercraft services operated by Hoverspeed, which was declared bankrupt in 2005.

The railway station re-opened as the Dover Cruise Terminal and can accommodate up to three cruise ships at a time. The White Cliffs remain one of the most iconic and memorable parts of the Kent coast and the strategic importance of the town has been recognised throughout its history.

This well illustrated book describes the full history of the Port of Dover.

Liverpool Docks Through Time

Resumé - Liverpool has been an important port since the seventeenth century, when the city began to import West Indian sugar and Virginian tobacco, exporting Lancashire textiles in return. As trade expanded through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, so too did the Liverpool Docks.

In "Liverpool Docks Through Time", Ian Collard uses a wide collection of photographs to guide us through the process of change and growth, from the early years through the massive expansion of the nineteenth century and the reconstruction and rebuilding that followed the Second World War to the new patterns of trade that emerged later in the twentieth century and up to the present day.

Covering everything from White Star ocean liners to the tugs of the modern docks and from hard-working freighters to restored sailing ships, this is a comprehensive guide.

Liverpool Docks Through Time

The Port of Liverpool in the 1960s and 1970s

Resumé - In the 1960s and 1970s, many of the traditional shipping companies trading or based in Liverpool slowly vanished because of containerisation or competition from passenger aircraft. Many of these shipping lines had been in operation since the early years of the 19th century and had provided links with the outposts of the Empire and the developing independent countries of the Commonwealth.
They had been established in the days of sailing ships and had survived the transition from sail to steam and had provided a lifeline to the country in the difficult days of the First and Second World Wars and the Great Depression of the 1930s.

With a fascinating collection of newly unearthed photographs, shipping historian Ian Collard documents this important period of transition in the history of one of the world's most famous ports.

London Docks in the 1960s

Resumé - The 1960s were the last decade of what might be called the traditional London docks scene. Ships could still be seen in the Pool, upstream of Tower Bridge; one could see lines of ships berth at the Royal Docks.
Famous shipping companies, some like P&O dating back over a hundred years, were represented, and cargo-handling methods were unchanged.

Barges were brought in to deliver or collect cargoes, while veterans of the war years and possibly earlier could still be seen. It was still possible to see passenger ships in the Royal Docks. As the new ships appeared they were a little bigger and a little faster, but otherwise little different from their predecessors of an earlier generation.

All this is captured through Mark Lee Inman's historic and rare images, taking in the stretch from Tower Bridge right down to Tilbury. The photography is supported by a wealth of available technical detail, including the vessel's date of build, gross tonnage and ownership, along with a comprehensive summary of its history and any claims to fame.

Maritime Portsmouth

Resumé - For three centuries Portsmouth has been the leading base of the Royal Navy but the naval heritage of its port can be traced back to the Roman invasion of Britain. From the Roman walls of Portchester to the best-preserved Georgian dockyard in the world and the illustrious HMS Victory, Portsmouth is amongst the most important naval sites in the world.

This fascinating book, in its new and fully revised edition, focuses on the history and present status of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard as well as the magnificent ships Victory, Warrior and Mary Rose that have been preserved and are now on display at Portsmouth.

Drawing on impressive original research and illustrated by a host of colourful photographs, author Paul Brown has created a concise and helpful guide to the key maritime attractions in Portsmouth and Gosport, including the Submarine Museum, the sea forts, the Gunwharf and the commercial port.

Ships and Shipbuilders - Pioneers of Design and Construction

Resumé - In the past three centuries the ship has developed from the relatively unsophisticated sail-driven vessel which would have been familiar to the sailors of the Tudor navy, to the huge motor-driven container ships, nuclear submarines and vast cruise liners that ply our seas today. Who were the innovators and builders who, during that span of time, prompted and instigated the most significant advances?

In this book the author describes the lives and deeds of more the 120 great engineers, scientists, philosophers, businessmen, shipwrights, naval architects and inventors who shaped ship design and shipbuilding world wide.

Covering the story chronologically, and going back briefly even to Archimedes, such well-known names as Anthony Deane, Peter the Great, James Watt, Robert Fulton and Isambard Kingdom Brunel share space with lesser known characters like the luckless Frederic Sauvage, a pioneer of screw propulsion who, unable to interest the French navy in his tests in the early 1830s, was bankrupted and landed in debtor's prison.
With the inclusion of such names as Ben Lexcen, the Australian yacht designer who developed the controversial winged keel for the 1983 America's Cup, the story is brought right up to date. Concise linking chapters place all these innovators in context so that a clear and fascinating history of the development of ships and shipbuilding emerges from the pages.
