Airport Buses

All of Britain's airports are served by buses and coaches in some form or other, whether it be by regular services from nearby towns and cities, those many miles way, or by buses connecting them with the airport's own long-stay or off-site car parks.
Thus a wide variety of vehicle types can be seen, some in the livery of their owners while others are specially branded for their daily duties. In addition, many airports use airside buses to transport passengers from the terminal building to waiting aircraft and as such are not often in the sight of airport visitors.

All these aspects are covered through text and photographs in this book to illustrate how the airport scene has changed over the past sixty years.

Australian Buses and Coaches

This book presents a chronological overview of Australian buses, showcasing the evolution from the oldest color images to the latest models. While the focus is primarily on buses, it also highlights Australian-built chassis commonly used for coach operations.

Before World War II, buses were predominantly of British origin with locally crafted bodywork. In the 1970s, there was a surge in European chassis adoption, which now forms the majority of modern buses. Australia also saw influence from various chassis manufacturers worldwide, including Japan, Korea, USA, New Zealand, and Canada. Each state had its own body builders, contributing to a diverse range of designs.

Featuring a multitude of body designs, this lavishly illustrated book captures key moments in Australia's bus history. It's a captivating read for both bus enthusiasts and anyone with fond memories of riding Australian buses.

Buses of Malta

Until the last quarter of the twentieth century Maltese buses had generally had locally constructed bodywork, often a modified chassis of UK or American origin. A variety of liveries was carried.
By the mid-1970s, out went the traditional liveries to be replaced by a uniform 'spray green' with white roof for route buses, while coaches initially carried a livery of buff and white.

The start of the 1980s saw the importation of complete vehicles from the UK. AEC Swifts were sourced from London Transport, while a variety of Bedford and Ford coaches started to appear carrying bodies by Plaxton and Duple. Other types included Bristol LH, AEC Reliance, Leyland Leopard, Tiger Cub and Panther Cub.

In typical Maltese fashion vehicles were often modified with different axles, engines and gearboxes, bodies rebuilt and, in some cases, replaced totally. In 1995, the livery changed to yellow/white with an orange waistband and continued so until 2011.

Leyland Buses in Israel

This book, the first ever written on the subject of Leyland buses in Israel, tells the story of the company's decades-long partnership with the state of Israel. First introduced on a large scale in Israel in the fifties, the Leylands were phased out in the late eighties before being retired completely, having been replaced with modern German bus models that were built by Daimler Benz and MAN.
Some were sold abroad, to developing countries, where they are said to be still running today, but the majority were quietly scrapped and broken up.

Fortunately a few escaped the cutter's torch and are kept in mint condition in Egged's Heritage Center in Holon, a symbol of solid British engineering. For countless Israelis who are old enough to remember the sight and the sound of a Leyland bus in the streets of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, they provide a chance to go back in time for one more ride on the elderly Tiger.
As a tribute to what can only be described as the most durable and reliable buses to have ever run in Israel, this book is token of admiration and appreciation of that powerful, all-terrain workhorse: the Leyland bus.

Restoring a Bus

In the late 1980s, when he first took an interest in the buses he was travelling on, Kenny Barclay wouldn't have imagined in his wildest dreams that he would ever own one.
Now he has four. Purchasing a Leyland Leopard from 1980 in May 2007, three more buses of varying shapes and sizes followed over the next two years and he has lovingly restored each of them.

Here, Kenny Barclay gives a fascinating insight into this restoration process. A history of each bus, including technical specifications, is included alongside a selection of images of each vehicle in its heyday. This is followed by a fully illustrated account of each of the restoration projects, as well as photographs of the buses once restored to their former glory.

Packed with fascinating photography, "Restoring a Bus" is perfect both for those looking to enter the preservation scene and those who simply admire vintage vehicles.

Saved for Posterity - Bus and Coach Preservation

In the sixty years since the birth of the bus and coach preservation movement, the number of vehicles saved for present and future generations to admire has grown from a tiny handful to more than 3,000.
From a small acorn has grown a massive oak, and those pioneers who planted the first seed never dreamed that their hobby would spread not only to every corner of the UK, but overseas too.

From purchasing and restoring a single vehicle in 1956, bus and coach preservation has now expanded to the setting up of transport museums across Britain, where vehicles of varying ages are displayed, to outdoor events where they can be examined, and `running days' that allow the public to experience a ride on them.

The photographs included within these pages show how the hobby has developed and the variety of vehicles that are now preserved, as well as some that were once `saved', but sadly failed to survive the passage of time.
