VW Bus - 40 Years of Splitties, Bays & Wedges

Author Richard Copping has collected a wealth of contemporary brochures from all the leading converters, knitted them together and produced a unique and vibrant story of the VW Camper from the first and often rustic conversions of the 1950s to the sophisticated homes on wheels of the late 1980s.

Stripping out the original text, Richard has carefully replaced it with his own lively yet informative story - while carefully retaining both the popular look and nostalgic feel of the age.
From the untangling of the many stories that contributed to VW Camper history to a restorer's dream of detailed specifications and from the quirkiest of marketing strategies amazingly and endearingly primitive in the 1950s to suavely sophisticated in the latter days, if the word Camper is in it, it's covered.

The meticulous reproduction of advertising brochures, many of which can easily be the best part of 50-years old, make this a hard to put down coffee table volume for some - a book with very much in vogue nostalgic visual appeal. For others, the lure of a lively and informative story peppered with carefully detailed pictures will ensure the book is a useful reference to visit over and over again.

Richard Copping's extensive collection of rarely seen advertising material provides a unique background to a much-needed book, designed to delight the multitude of VW Camper fans far and wide.

The Volkswagen Bus Book - Type 2 Transporter, Camper, Panel van, Pick-up, Wagon

This is the story of VW's timeless classic, the Type 2 Transporter, universally known as the "Bus". It is sixty years since the idea of VW's Transporter was conceived by Dutchman Ben Pon after seeing motorized trollies conveying components around the British-managed Wolfsburg factory in the mid-1940s.

With blueprints complete by November 1948, the "Bulli" as it was known in Germany went into production a year later. The 100,000th Transporter was built in October 1954, the millionth in 1961 and the 3 millionth in 1971, the total number of vehicles exceeding 6.5 million.
The Transporter changed little in concept throughout decades of production, and remained in production in Brazil until very recently, nearly six decades after its postwar German debut.

Researched in incredible detail, this book explores the story of the VW bus, from early origins through to the present day.

Volkswagen Transporter - Le vetture che hanno fatto la storia

This is the story of the rear-engined Volkswagen Transporter, the Beetle's faithful road companion of which it was given the mechanics. Created from an ingenious idea sketched out in a diary, the Transporter came into the world at a crucial moment: the years of reconstruction after a disastrous Second World War.
People needed everything; the economy had to get going again. So an inexpensive vehicle was needed to help recovery along: Volkswagen's Transporter was the right answer at the right time.

Produced in many different versions, the Bulli, nickname of the first model with divided rear windows was able to meet the needs of shopkeepers, artisans, holiday operators and even large families to become a mobile box.
The vehicle's versatility was proverbial and for years no competitor was able to offer so much personalisation as standard. The rear-engined versions accompanied mankind right through to the late eighties before being replaced by a banal front-engined, front-wheel drive vehicle that was no different from its competitors.

The VW Bus: History of a Passion

In November 1949,a new epoch of automotive history began with the presentation of the first small Transporter by Volkswagen. Like no other light utility vehicle before, the variety-rich space-saver from Wolfsburg influenced the development of a very new generation of universally usable minivans. Six decades after its introduction, the "Bulli," the nickname used by its legion of fans, has lost none of its fascination. Today, well-maintained examples of the T1 (1950-1967) and T2 (1967-1979) have become rare and particularly expensive collector's items.

In this book, author Jörg Hajt portrays VW buses of all body types, lovingly restored and customized, and offers a comprehensive history of the brand. Nearly 200 archival and modern photos document the wide range of Transporters from the camper to emergency vehicles to a contractor's van and much more. Complete construction and technical details and important tips for buying a VW Transporter today round out this wonderful pictorial volume.

The VW Camper Story

Once the British had helped perfect a way to raise the roof, the Volkswagen Camper became a worldwide phenomenon - the mobile home for everyone from student adventurers to gung-ho grandparents. Volkswagen vans have been front (originally rear) engined and water (originally air) cooled now for over 20 years, yet the spirit of the Camper is as unbowed as ever.
Here, award-winning writer Giles Chapman tells the whole, amazing story.
