First World War in the Air

The four years between 1914 and 1918 saw an incredible growth in air power. Beginning with the flimsy early aircraft, seemingly held together just by string and fabric, the author paints a picture of a bygone era when nobody knew quite what could be achieved, or how aircraft could be used.
From the early years of the First World War, when men took to the air without guns or parachutes, to the final stage of the conflict when huge, streamlined aeroplane fleets dominated the skies, this is a story of courage and dedication, of sudden death and public adulation for men whose life expectancy was measured in days rather than months.

This book is an account of how the development of aerial warfare took place. Drawing on much original material such as diaries and combat reports, it charts the growth of air power during the war years. Original photographs and artwork add to the atmosphere of the time.
The air aces, the castor oil and the sudden rattle of machine guns, the Dawn Patrol, Zeppelin raids, dogfights and acts of supreme valour are all here. In wonderful detail, this is the story of how brave young airmen took their lives in their hands and pushed the boundaries of courage and knowledge to the limits.

Allied Jet Killers of World War 2 (Osprey)

Allied fighter pilots began encountering German jets - principally the outstanding Me 262 fighter - from the autumn of 1944. Stunned by the aircraft's speed and rate of climb, it took USAAF and RAF units time to work out how to combat this deadly threat as the Luftwaffe targeted the medium and heavy bombers attacking targets across the Reich.

A number of high-scoring aces from the Eighth Air Force (Drew, Glover, Meyer, Norley and Yeager, to name but a few) succeeded in claiming Me 262s, Me 163 and Ar 234s during the final months of the campaign, as did RAF aces like Tony Gaze and `Foob' Fairbanks.
The exploits of both famous and little-known pilots will be chronicled in this volume, detailing how they pushed their P-47s, P-51s, Spitfires and Tempests to the limits of their performance in order to down the Luftwaffe's `wonder weapons'.

1939 - The Second World War in the Air in Photographs

On 1 September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. With political agreements in place to come to Poland's aid, Britain and France both declared war on Germany within two days. It was the start of a conflict that would erupt over every continent; it saw the deaths of tens of millions of people, much of central Europe destroyed, the development of jets, intercontinental missiles, computers and the Atomic Bomb.

1939 saw the first display of the German Blitzkrieg in Poland, along with the deployment of RAF squadrons to France and the first bombing raids over both Germany and the UK.
There had long been omens to show the ways that war in the air would develop, with the Germans honing their Blitzkrieg tactics in the Spanish Civil War and the Japanese bombing civilian populations in China.

This book is the first in a series covering the Second World War in the air year by year.

1940 - The Second World War in the Air in Photographs

On 1 September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. It was the start of a conflict that would erupt over every continent, see the deaths of tens of millions of people, much of central Europe destroyed, the development of jets, ballistic missiles and computers as well as the atomic bomb.
1940 saw the conquest by Nazi Germany of Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and France, all involving heavy use of airpower, either transporting troops or closely supporting the armoured forces on the ground.

Later that summer, RAF Fighter Command would defend Britain against the Luftwaffe's drive for air superiority over the English Channel, and in the autumn the Blitz against London and other British cities would begin. After a period of 'Phoney War', 1940 saw the war in the air begin in earnest.
A unique look at the second year of the Second World War in the air through the medium of old photographs.

1941 - The Second World War in the Air in Photographs

The year 1941 saw the invasion by Nazi Germany of the Soviet Union, the biggest example yet of Blitzkrieg. The war would widen still further at the very end of the year when aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the US naval base at Pearl Harbor. The year would also see the sustained bombing of Malta, the German Blitz on British cities and the invasion of Greece and Yugoslavia.

This book is the third in a series covering the Second World War in the air year by year through the medium of old photographs.

1942 - The Second World War in the Air in Photographs

The fourth in a series of books looking at the Second World War in the air using old photographs, focusing on the events of 1942 in Europe, North Africa and Asia and the Pacific.

The year 1942 saw the eruption of war in the Far East as Japanese forces continued the offensive across Asia and the Pacific, which had begun with the attacks on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. However, the Japanese advance would be checked at the Battle of the Coral Sea, Guadalcanal and, most importantly, the Battle of Midway.

Meanwhile, the US was building up its strength in Europe as well, the Eighth Air Force beginning offensive operations against Germany, while fighting continued in the Mediterranean and North Africa as the Malta convoys continued to scrape through and the Battle of Stalingrad dominated the Eastern Front. The Second World War was now a truly global conflict.

1943 - The Second World War in the Air in Photographs

1943 saw the tide of war change fully in the Allies' favour. The Axis powers were in retreat on most fronts. North Africa was conquered and this gave the Allies the ability to fly one way over Europe, reaching parts once too far from Allied airbases, including the Romanian oil fields.

Sicily and then Italy were invaded in 1943 and preparations were well in hand for D-Day, while the Dambusters raid destroyed the Ruhr dams. The daytime bombing of Germany by the Americans and the nighttime destruction by the RAF was having a huge effect on infrastructure and the ability of the Germans to wage war, but also having a huge impact on the German people.

In the Pacific, the Japanese had been soundly defeated at Midway in 1942 and were now suffering the consequences of the loss of so many aircraft carriers. They were severely weakened and the Americans were now undertaking the island hopping campaign that would continue through 1944.

Louis Archard continues his story of the air war, with many rare images covering all aspects of the battle for air supremacy that would ultimately help win the war for the Allies.

1944 - The Second World War in the Air in Photographs

1944 would see the beginning of the end for the Axis powers. On 6 June, Allied troops landed in Normandy, backed by massive airpower, while at the end of the month the Battle of the Philippine Sea saw crippling losses inflicted on the Japanese carrier force.

However, the year also saw the first air to air victory for a jet aircraft when a German Me 262 shot down an RAF Mosquito and the start of the use of both the V-1 Flying Bomb and the V-2 rocket against London, among other targets.
Meanwhile, the bombing campaigns in both Europe and the Far East continued, including the destruction of Monte Cassino from the air, and in September Operation Market Garden attempted to capture the Arnhem bridge.

Louis Archard continues his story of the war, with many rare images covering all aspects of the battle for air supremacy that would ultimately win the war for the Allies.

1945 - The Second World War in the Air in Photographs

1945 saw the bomber offensive against Germany reach its peak with the controversial attack on Dresden, while US B-29 bombers carried out fire-bombing raids against Japanese cities and the US island-hopping campaign drew ever closer to Japan, with the Japanese resorting to intense kamikaze attacks to try and stop the invasion of Okinawa.

V-2 rockets continued to land on British cities. British and US bombers dropped food supplies to Dutch civilians in famine-hit areas of the Netherlands in operations Manna and Chowhound.
Forces occupying Germany discovered German advances in jet and rocket technology, and in August 1945 the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, ending the war.

In the Cold War that would start to develop not long after the end of the Second World War, the Soviets would develop their own nuclear weapons and US and Soviet jets would clash in the skies over Korea while US and British air power would help keep West Berlin supplied.

Rare Birds : Forgotten Aircraft of the Second World War

The Second World War saw the apex of piston-engine aircraft design, and ushered the world into the jet age. Anybody who studies aviation will know the names: Spitfire, Mustang, Zero, Messerschmitt, Shturmovik. But there were many more aircraft to take to the skies before and during the war, and frequently their stories remain unknown.

This book seeks to tell those stories, to bring to the fore the forgotten warbirds. From the valiant Poles fighting the might of the Luftwaffe in their obsolescent craft, to the varied and excellent craft of the French Armee De l'Air, to the graceful craft of Italy's Regia Aeronautica. With stops around the globe, this book seeks to tell the tales of the forgotten or the doomed or the never-quites.

The stories of these aircraft, drawn from Allies and Axis nations alike, bring forth a fuller picture of aviation during the greatest airborne conflict in world history.
Telling these stories will give readers an interesting, and informative, look into the past-with personal reflections and a call to arms for the study of history itself.
