Spanish Military Jets 1954-2022 - Difficult Beginnings
After World War II, Spain's air force largely relied on older aircraft, with its most modern fighter being the Messerschmitt Bf 109F.
However, after the 1954 Pact of Madrid and support from the US, Spain received its first military jets. Though not the most advanced, these aircraft helped modernize Spain's air forces, bringing them in line with European standards.
Spain's jet fleet eventually included the Lockheed T-33, North American F-86 Sabre, Hispano HA-200 Saeta and HA-220 Súper Saeta, Lockheed F-104G Starfighter, Dassault Mirage III and F-1, Northrop F-5, McDonnell Douglas F-4C Phantom II, and Harrier AV-8S.
This first of two volumes on Spanish military jets covers the early aircraft received by Spain, their roles, and the liveries they wore. With more than 140 images, this book highlights how these jets played a key role in modernizing Spain's military.
