The steam trains of the 19th century made leisure and adventure travel possible under secure conditions, marking the beginning of modern tourism. In Spain, this revolution commenced on October 28, 1848, with the line connecting the city of Barcelona to Mataró.

"Trenes por España" compiles the most significant routes that exist today. Some are historical, others stand out for the beauty of their journeys; there are those considered luxurious, and thematic trains that transport travelers to another era.

This book, as described by its author Sergi Reboredo, is a wish list featuring some of the most interesting train journeys in Spain. While some may be familiar to the public, others may be less known or entirely unknown, but all aim to provide travelers with an experience that, to this day, remains very much alive: traveling by train.

Loks der spanischen Eisenbahnen RENFE seit 1941

Die wirtschaftlichen Folgen des spanischen Bürgerkriegs führten zur Gründung der Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles (RENFE) am 24. Januar 1941. Rund 50 Jahre später verkehrte der erste Hochgeschwindigkeitszug AVE (Alta Velocidad Española) zwischen Madrid und Sevilla.
Mittlerweile besitzt Spanien eines der bedeutendsten Hochgeschwindigkeitsschienennetze der Welt.

Eisenbahnfreunde wissen, dass es auf der iberischen Halbinsel ein interessantes Eisenbahnnetz zu bereisen gibt, welches einen abwechslungsreichen Fahrzeugpark vom AVE bis zum Talgo bietet, den der Experte Thomas Estler erklärt.

Iberian Railways

The railways of Spain and Portugal saw steam locomotives working on the main lines until the late 1970s, although in Spain several mining companies still employed steam into the 1980s. Iberian railways were unusual in that they used a wider gauge of 5 ft 3 in. for their main lines, which was rare in Europe, and this book shows some of the last Spanish main line steam-operated services, both passenger and freight, around Salamanca in 1974, and the coal lines from Andorra to Escatron, plus the narrow-gauge lines of the Ponferrada to Villablino coal system.

Also included are some of the last steam-operated trains on the broad-gauge Douro Valley line from Porto to Regua and Pocinho, and the narrow-gauge lines which branched off of this line through beautiful scenery in the Port wine-producing area of Portugal, using ancient locos and rolling stock.
From his collection, George Woods presents a selection of previously unpublished colour photographs, taken in an area which does not often appear in print.

This book, written by Alfonso Marco, offers a comprehensive account for the first time, detailing the trains that traversed and still traverse the Pyrenean surroundings of the Aragón Valley. It delves into the historical episodes of a route both symbolic and unfortunate, losing its international utility long ago yet retaining its character.

The author approaches this remarkable railway legacy with honesty, avoiding sentimentality. While focusing on its rail significance, Marco also acknowledges Canfranc's broader social, scenic, economic, and historical implications. Without trains, Canfranc would lose its purpose, yet it holds dimensions beyond just rail transport.

El ferrocarril de las cercanías de Barcelona - Desde los orígenes hasta la creación de Renfe

The Barcelona Suburban Railway service is currently a pressing topic, aiming to expand transportation options while promoting cleaner and more efficient travel. Understanding the origins of this railway network is crucial, as its routes reflect various historical initiatives and projects by engineers like Ildefons Cerdà, Eduard Maristany, and Fernando Reyes, who aimed to enhance society.

This book explores the history of the Barcelona Suburban Railway from its inception to the formation of Renfe in 1941. It delves into the reasons behind most railway routes, station placements, and the strengths and limitations of inherited infrastructures that form the basis for today's train operations.

El ferrocarril de la rodalia de Barcelona - Des dels orígens fins la creació de Renfe

El servei de Rodalies a Barcelona constitueix un tema de màxima actualitat. Cal incrementar l'oferta de transport i aconseguir que els desplaçaments siguin menys contaminants i més eficients.
Abocats a aquest plantejament, resulta d'interès conèixer l'origen de la xarxa ferroviària que comprèn el servei de Rodalies. Els traçats que avui dia coneixem obeeixen a iniciatives més o menys audaces i a projectes més o menys encertats, subjectes al seu context històric. Enginyers com Ildefons Cerdà, Eduard Maristany o Fernando Reyes contribuïren a millorar la societat del seu temps.

Aquest llibre repassa la història de Rodalies de Barcelona des de l'inici fins a la formació de Renfe (1941) i convida a conèixer el perquè de la majoria dels traçats ferroviaris, l'emplaçament de les estacions i les bondats i les limitacions de les infraestructures heretades del passat que són la base sobre la qual circulen els trens actuals.
