After 1989, the "Rust Cross" achieved cult status due to its morbid charm. The reconstruction took twelve years, but its fascination remained. Today, 1,512 long-distance, regional and suburban trains pass through the station every day, as well as around 123,000 people getting on, off and changing trains, giving the station a top position in Germany.
