Frankrijk produceerde enkele van de mooiste en meest rijkversierde passagiersschepen van de twintigste eeuw. Beginnend in 1912 met de France, een schip met vier schoorstenen, zet de nostalgische reis zich voort met de grote en statige transatlantische lijners van de French Line, de CGT. Hiertoe behoren de beroemde Île-de-France, Normandie en Liberté, maar ook de kleinere passagiersschepen van de French Line.

De nestor van de oceaanstomerhistorici brengt één van de laatste transatlantische oceaanstomers tot leven: de legendarische France, later omgedoopt tot Norway.

Als toegewijde passagier gedurende de gehele levensduur van het schip, is John Maxtone-Graham bij uitstek geschikt om ons deze rijke, rijk geïllustreerde geschiedenis van de France/Norway te schenken. De schitterende oceaanstomer SS France van de French Line was uniek in haar klasse tot de komst van de QE2 in 1967. Ze was snel, elegant, rijkelijk bemand en bood een weelderige catering.

Twaalf jaar lang was ze een ster op de Noord-Atlantische route. Maar in de zomer van 1974, toen straalvliegtuigen het transatlantische reizen domineerden, werd de France uit de vaart genomen en vijf jaar lang aan haar lot overgelaten.
Toen kwam er een wonderbaarlijke wending: de directeur van Norwegian Cruise Line besloot de France te kopen; het schip werd verbouwd voor warm weer en omgedoopt tot Norway. één van de laatste oceaanstomers op de Noord-Atlantische Oceaan werd het eerste megaschip van het Caribisch gebied.
De unieke eigenschappen van deze ongelooflijke romp, die in twee contrasterende modi voer, verdienen het om herinnerd te worden - zij was het baanbrekende grote schip dat een toen nog onbekende schaal van cruisen populair maakte.

The ship has engine failure, a broken mast, and rough seas... It is just 3 p.m. when the rescue crew resumes their place at the table to the applause of the other guests and survivors.

For the 40th anniversary of the SNSM in 2007, Michel Giard dedicated a first book to sea rescuers along the shores of Brittany. The winds being favorable, the adventure continues along the Atlantic coast!
