The Imperial German Navy of World War I : A Comprehensive Photographic Study of the Kaisers Naval Forces

The Imperial German Navy of WWI is a series of books (Warships, Campaigns, & Uniforms) that provide a broad view of the Kaiser's naval forces through the extensive use of photographs.
Every effort has been made to cover all significant areas during the war period. In addition to the primary use of photographs, technical information is provided for each warship along with its corresponding service history; with a special emphasis being placed on those warships that participated in the Battle of Skagerrak (Jutland).

Enzyklopädie deutscher Kriegsschiffe - Grosskampfschiffe, Kreuzer, Kanonenboote, Torpedoboote und Zerstörer bis 1945

Originally, the Imperial Navy was only used for coastal protection. But the ambition of Kaiser Wilhelm II turned it into one of the largest fleets in the world.
After the lost war, the now named Reichsmarine had to be rebuilt under the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles. This rebuilding culminated in the increased naval armament of the Third Reich.

In his encyclopedia of German warships, Hans Karr describes all large and medium-sized surface ship types of the Imperial Navy and the Navy, i.e. line ships and battleships, cruisers, destroyers, aircraft carriers, coastal armored ships, gunboats and torpedo boats.

Deutsche Kriegsschiffe - Das kaiserliche Ostasien-Geschwader 1859–1914

Because imperial Germany wanted to become a world power, it tried to be present on all the world's oceans and to acquire colonies. The squadrons were meant to protect them, assert claims and show strength. They were not always purely representative, as the Boxer Rebellion proves.

In this book, naval expert Hans Karr devotes himself to Germany's maritime colonial history. He describes the foreign cruisers and stations, the Tsingtau naval base, the East Asian Cruiser Squadron from 1897 to 1914 and its ships from the Asian and Australian stations.

Deutsche Kriegsschiffe - Hilfskreuzer und Handelsstörer 1914-1918 (Typenkompass)

In order to quickly increase the size of its own war fleet, merchant ships were refitted and armed even in the age of sailing ships. The warring parties also used this tactic in the First World War.

Because they were inferior to real warships, Germany used the auxiliary cruisers it acquired in this way mainly to disrupt and prevent the enemy's shipping of goods.
The success of these ventures was questionable, but ships like the Seeadler under Captain Count Luckner became legendary.

Pages du livre [TK] Hilfskreuzer und Handelsstorer 1914-1918 (1)

In this Typenkompass, Robert Rosentreter presents all the important German auxiliary cruisers and merchant raiders that the Imperial Navy sent into - mostly short-lived - service around the globe during the First World War.
Each type is presented using a photo, a historical description and a technical data sheet.
