Deutsche Militärmotorräder - Seit 1905

Wenngleich zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts der Motorradbau seinen ersten Boom erlebte, begann sich das Motorrad nur langsam während des Ersten Weltkrieges in der Truppe zu etablieren.
In der Weimarer Republik stellte die Reichswehr dann zunehmend Kradschützen-Einheiten auf schweren Motorrädern in Dienst. Erst 1938 begannen BMW und Zündapp mit der Entwicklung so genannter überschwerer Kräder mit Geländeuntersetzung, Rückwärtsgang und Beiwagenantrieb. Nach dem Krieg kamen vor allem Zweitakter zum Einsatz.

Two-Wheeled Blitzkrieg

No other combatant nation employed motorcycles on the scale produced by the Third Reich. During Nazi Germany's campaigns, first of invasion, then of the retreat that followed, motorcycles served a variety of functions: as couriers, for reconnaissance, for medical evacuation, as assault shock troops taking the brunt of battle, even as tank destroyers and for delivering hot meals to the frontline.

As the Third Reich gained absolute control of Germany and sought to spread its domain by fire and steel, some 300 different brands of motorcycles had been in production, yet only a select few were chosen to join the Wehrmacht in its war of conquest.
Among the motorcycles were the vaunted BMW, as well as NSU, Zundapp and the now lesser known yet `bullet tough' DKW, among several others, either domestically produced or confiscated from occupied territories.

As with all motorcyclists, there was a kinship among the soldiers on two (or three) wheels who called themselves Kradmelder (despatch riders).
"Two-Wheeled Blitzkrieg" shares the uniquely personal, largely unpublished images they took of themselves and their machines as they entered the crucible of war.

Dieser Bildband dokumentiert den Einsatz der vielen Kradfahrer und ihrer unterschiedlichen Kräder zwischen 1934 und 1945. Als Kradmelder oder Kradschützen versahen sie in Vorkriegs- und Kriegszeiten ihren Dienst auf "Stahlrössern". Auf Kriegsschauplätzen von Norwegen bis Afrika und vom Atlantik bis zur Wolga wurden sie mit überwiegend nicht geländegängigen Straßenmaschinen ins Feld geschickt.

Spezielle Ausrüstung wie Hand- und Fußheizung oder der ausschließlich für Kradfahrer bestimmte "Kradmantel" wird in diesem Buch vorgestellt. Neben beeindruckenden Einsatzaufnahmen mit herkömmlichen Wehrmachtskrädern von bekannten Herstellern wie BMW, NSU, Zündapp oder DKW enthält dieser Band auch eine Fülle von Fotos requirierter Maschinen. Ohne den Einsatz dieser zivilen Motorräder wäre das Kradmeldersystem im Laufe des Zweiten Weltkriegs nicht möglich gewesen.

Ein besonderes Problem ergab sich bei den Beutekrädern. Sie konnten von der Wehrmacht nur gewartet werden, wenn deren Herstellerwerke im deutschen Besatzungsgebiet lagen oder umfangreiche Ersatzteillager erbeutet wurden.
Abgebildet sind einige französische Beutekräder von Terrot, Rene Gillet und Gnome et Rhone, die zum Einsatz kamen. Zusätzlich vermittelt dieser ungewöhnliche Bildband eine Vorstellung vom Kradeinsatz ehemaliger Kriegsgegner. Neben den bekannten Solo- und Beiwagengespannen von FN, Indian Chief, Harley Davidson, BSA und Norton werden hier auch die superleichten Kräder der englischen und amerikanischen Luftlandetruppen vorgestellt.
