Conquest of the Atlantic : Cunard Liners of the 1950s and 1960s

Cunard, the most famous name in shipping, turns 175 in 2015. The company began back in 1840, with paddlewheel steamers, but grew and progressed and created some of the largest, fastest and most luxurious liners afloat in their time. The final 'golden age' on the Atlantic run between Europe & America was the 1950s, when the Company slogan 'Getting There Was Half the Fun' seemed so apt.

Cunard had twelve liners running Atlantic crossings in 1958, for example, the same year the speedy passenger jet appeared and immediately stole trans-ocean travellers.
The Cunard 'cast' of the late '50s includes such celebrated ocean liners like the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth as well as others such as the Mauretania, Saxonia and smaller ships such as the Media and the Parthia.

This is the story of these great ships, all still well remembered, and of life onboard them. Cunard would, of course, face furious competition with jet aircraft and, by 1969, be reduced to one Atlantic liner, the legendary Queen Elizabeth 2.

Cunard Cruise Ships

The Cunard Line's Britannia was the first steamship to establish regular communication across the Atlantic. She sailed on her maiden voyage on 4 July 1840, setting in motion the first regular steamship line. Iron supplanted wood in hull construction and the screw propeller was gradually replacing the paddle wheel.

The line became a public company in 1878 and became the Cunard Steam Ship Company Ltd. The construction of many famous ships such as Mauretania, Lusitania, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth followed, and the company continued to trade in profit until the introduction of the jet aircraft in the 1960s and 1970s.
Following various restructuring and takeovers, the Cunard Line was acquired by the Carnival Corporation and now offers cruises on the Three Queens.

Utilising many rare and unpublished images, Ian Collard offers a superbly illustrated look at the cruise ships operated by Cunard. Included here are images of the ships in many guises and liveries, with comprehensive annotation of these iconic liners.

Shipwrecks of the Cunard Line

This fascinating book provides a unique record of the careers and final underwater resting places of ships of the Cunard Line, whose rich history spans over 300 ships and nearly two centuries.
Many books have been published on Cunard's heritage but the final fate of these ships is often little more than a footnote of history. Authors Sam Warwick and Mike Roussel have taken the shipwrecks as a starting point to create a vivid new history.

Featured vessels include the well-known Caronia, Lancastria, Campania, Lusitania, Malta, Oregon, Scotia and Carpathia, famous for rescuing the survivors from the Titanic, as well as many others.
Events surrounding the wrecking of each vessel are thoroughly explored and unique diver accounts are incorporated, along with never-before-seen underwater images of the wrecks. Finishing off with practical data for interested divers, this book offers a fresh analysis of Cunard's maritime history.

The Lusitania Saga and Myth - 100 Years on

The RMS Lusitania entered service with Cunard in 1907. The first transatlantic express liner powered by marine turbines, she could complete the Liverpool-New York crossing in five days and had a top speed of 25 knots. She restored the British supremacy of the key North Atlantic route which the Germans had seized.

All this ended on 7 May 1915 when she was torpedoed by a German U-boat and sank 18 minutes later with the loss of 1,198 passengers and crew (interestingly 39% of those aboard survived whereas only 32% of those on the Titanic survived despite the latter taking 2 hours, 40 minutes to sink.)

The Author concentrates not just on the disaster but its aftermath including the political recriminations and the inquiry. As a result of the loss of 128 American citizens the Germans signed an agreement not to attack US shipping.
Their breach of this was a major contributory reason, along with the Zimmermann Telegram, why the USA entered the War.

This is a fascinating study of a major shipping disaster with profound consequences.

RMS Mauretania II (Classic Liners)

This book tells the remarkable story of the second Mauretania (1938-1965): her construction, her naming, her maiden voyage and her distinguished Second World War service, told through extracts from a rare diary of a soldier. Also recalled are two exciting escapes from torpedoing by German U-boats, and the tale of how this great liner was almost lost in a high-speed collision with the SS Île de France, which could have resulted in catastrophic loss of life.

Interviews with those who served on board, peppered with fascinating anecdotes, describe daily life on the ship, as well as the more unusual events such as royal visits. Recollections of the crew, from bell boy to captain, cover the famous Sunshine Caribbean cruises and an encounter with a hurricane in the North Atlantic, as well as her final voyage to the scrapyard.

Andrew Britton's unique access to original artefacts from the Mauretania, including captains' logbooks, publicity material, menus, deck plans and much more, makes this a collection like no other. Coupled with lavish photography, including a wealth of previously unpublished colour images, the result is an evocative book that preserves the memory of this great Cunard liner for future generations.

RMS Caronia - Cunard's Green Goddess (Classic Liners)

Painted in shades of green and known affectionately as the 'Green Goddess', Cunard's Caronia of 1949 ushered in the era of modern cruising. Designed almost exclusively for an untapped passenger market - luxury cruising - she represented Britain's recovery and moreover the rebirth of the world's maritime industry after the devastation of the Second World War.

With such illustrious Cunard predecessors as the Queen Mary, the ill-fated Lusitania, and the record-breaker Mauretania, Caronia was an instant favourite with the world's rich and famous. She gathered an exclusive, often American, clientele - the 'mink and diamonds set' - who sailed on her year after year.
Many passengers lived on board for years, giving her the air of an ultra-wealthy country club. Yet she ignominiously met her end while under tow to the breaker's yard, ending up on the rocks at Guam after running aground during a typhoon. Her subsequent salvage was the largest ever undertaken by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Illustrated with previously unpublished photographs and rare memorabilia, including work from maritime artist Robert Lloyd, this history of one of Cunard's most beloved liners is a must for all those who fondly remember the 'Green Goddess'.

RMS Queen Elizabeth

Built at the end of the Depression and launched on the weekend of the Munich Crisis, the Queen Elizabeth's maiden voyage was a wartime dash to New York to escape the Luftwaffe's bombs.
After a wartime career that saw her bring an American division to Gourock every few weeks, she finally entered company service for Cunard in 1946. She sailed with her sister Queen Mary through Cunard's golden years and was sold out of service in 1968, becoming a tourist attraction in Port Everglades.
Sold again, she became C. Y. Tung's Seawise University and was burned out in 1972 while being converted, before being scrapped where she lay in Hong Kong harbour.

Janette McCutcheon tells the story of Cunard's beautiful lady, as the Queen Elizabeth was known, using her fabulous collection of images and ephemera of the ship.

QE2: A 50th Anniversary Celebration

Fifty years ago the last British-built transatlantic liner was launched. Christened by HM the Queen on 20 September 1967, the 963ft-long vessel was named Queen Elizabeth 2. By the end of that same day, she was already known by her famous nickname: QE2.

Fast, smart and sleek, QE2 sailed over 5.6 million miles and carried more than 2.5 million passengers during a magnificent career spanning nearly forty years. Put simply, she carried more people further than any ship before her and remains the longest serving express liner in history.
Having sailed both as a liner and as a cruise ship, served her country in the Falklands conflict and undergone multiple makeovers, she also has one of the most fascinating histories of any vessel and remains one of the best loved and most celebrated.

With stories from captains, crew and passengers, and an unparalleled collection of photographs, Chris Frame and Rachelle Cross bring the majestic QE2 to life in this commemorative tribute.

QM2: A Photographic Journey

By the 1970s it looked as if QE2 would be the last of the great transatlantic ocean liners. However, over three decades later the world watched in awe as Queen Mary 2, the largest, longest, grandest and most expensive ocean liner ever to be constructed, set sail on her maiden voyage in 2004.
With 14 decks and beautiful lounges, dining rooms and a ballroom, QM2 evokes the glamour of the golden age of ocean travel.

"QM2: A Photographic Journey" allows the reader to experience this unique vessel from the comfort of their own home, with numerous photographs of each of QM2's public rooms as well as stunning exterior shots and behind the scenes access.
This revised edition has been extensively updated to reflect the 2016 refit, with many new photographs from around the ship.

Cunard's Modern Queens - A Celebration

2008 was a magical year for Cunard. For the first time, the line had three Queens in service: Queen Elizabeth 2, Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria. Queen Elizabeth 2 retired during the year, sailing for Dubai on 11 November, while Queen Mary 2 had reached her fifth anniversary as the largest ocean liner afloat and Queen Victoria entered service.

On 13 January 2008, all three liners were together for the first and last time in New York. After a successful first world cruise for Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth 2's twenty-sixth and final world cruise, all three ships rendez-voused in Southampton on 22 April for the last meeting of these three Queens.

Bowing out after a successful farewell season that saw her sail full on every voyage of the year, QE2 left Southampton amid the biggest fireworks display seen in the port since the advent of Queen Mary 2 five years earlier. In October 2010, Cunard once again had a third Queen in service, with the new Queen Elizabeth, built in Italy and named by Her Majesty the Queen at Southampton.
No other ships envoke the magic that Cunard's Queens have done since Queen Mary entered service in May 1936. Since then, a Cunard Queen has reigned the ocean wave. William H. Miller brings together a fantastic selection of images, with informative text, telling the story of Cunard's legendary modern Queens.
