Het kloppend hart - Arnhemsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij 1889-1978

For almost 90 years, a flourishing shipyard and machine factory was located in the heart of Arnhem: the Arnhemsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (ASM). For decades, the ASM was one of the city's largest employers, and its warehouses and cranes defined the face of the southern bank of the Rhine. The sound of the ships could be heard deep in the city.
After the shipyard was closed and dismantled, only a few foundations remained in an otherwise vacant lot. The ASM itself fell into oblivion.

This book aims to fill the gap in collective memory and revive the fascinating history of a shipbuilding family, their company and their employees. The story of the ASM runs from the industrialization in the nineteenth century via two world wars to the demise of shipbuilding in the seventies.

From steam engines via river tugs and dredgers to large seagoing vessels. From curly boy to director. Three authors describe different facets of that history. In addition, the book contains the stories of eight former employees and an abundance of visual material. The result is lively and multifaceted; a surprising window on a past that is actually still very close.

Paul van Vlissingen & zoon - Ondernemers in stoom

Paul van Vlissingen (1797-1876) is a pioneer in the field of steam energy. With his Amsterdam Steamboat Company he is the first in the Netherlands to open an overseas steam shipping connection: from Amsterdam to Hamburg.
With Abraham Dudok van Heel he starts the Royal Factory for Steam and other Machines Paul van Vlissingen & Dudok van Heel. They build the first iron steam ships with propeller in the Netherlands, the first steam locomotives in the Netherlands, balances for the steam pumping stations Cruquius and Lijnden for the draining of the Haarlemmermeer and steam engines for the sugar industry in Suriname, the Indies and West Brabant.

Son Paul Cornelis (1829-1906) further expanded the company from 1850 onwards. He took on major projects, such as the construction of the largest dry dock in Asia. He participated in the construction of the Paleis van Volksvlijt and in 1870 built the longest bridge in Europe, the railway bridge over the Hollands Diep near Moerdijk.
But the company went bankrupt and Paul C. emigrated to North America. At the end of the century he returned and was supervisor of the Stedelijk Museum in Haarlem, the later Frans Hals Museum, until his death.
In the meantime, the Factory made a fresh start under the name Werkspoor.

This Dutch book is a company history about a time when companies were still mainly family businesses. It is therefore also a dramatic family history, which extends over the entire 19th century. It is a story about pioneers, about forerunners.

Rotterdamse Beren - De 'Beer' en de 'IJsbeer' van Smit

In 'Rotterdamse Beren' keren we in eerste instantie terug naar 1926. Het jaar waarin de Rotterdamse werf van Piet Smit Jr. twee unieke schepen zou opleveren: De Jääkarhu en de Siberië.
De eerste een reus van een ijsbreker, vervaardigd voor Finland en de tweede de sterkste sleper van zijn tijd in ons land én tevens ook ijsbreker. Aan de hand van o.a. 50 foto's volgen we hun levensloop.

Stuwkracht in Staal - Motorenfabriek Bolnes Krimpen aan de Lek en / Motorenfabriek Smit & Bolnes Kinderdijk - Zierikzee

Johann Hendrik van Cappellen obtint en 1885 l'autorisation d'établir une usine de machines à vapeur et autres machines à Bolnes. Il y créa sa propre fonderie où étaient fabriqués, entre autres, des treuils, des cisailles, des plieuses et des poinçonneuses.
En 1909, le premier moteur à bulbe chaud à deux temps avec rinçage du carter fit son apparition. En 1910, faute de locaux suffisants, l'usine déménagea de Bolnes à l'île fluviale de Krimpen aan de Lek, située en face de Bolnes. Jusqu'en 1935, les moteurs à bulbe chaud étaient équipés des fameuses traverses et glissières, à l'instar des nombreuses machines à vapeur produites à la même époque. Entre-temps, grâce à leurs propres développements, ils s'étaient tournés vers la production de véritables moteurs diesel. À partir de 1928, les moteurs diesel de Bolnes furent produits avec un bâti ouvert ou fermé, selon les besoins.
En 1949, le premier moteur Bolnes entièrement soudé fut achevé. Outre son utilisation à terre et en mer, ce moteur s'avéra également parfaitement adapté aux nombreuses applications sur les dragues.

Parce que le moteur produisait "only" 50 ch par cylindre et que la demande de plus de puissance était élevée, notamment dans le monde du dragage, M. Dick Leonardus Hendrik Smit, directeur adjoint de l'entreprise familiale L. Smit & Zoon NV à Kinderdijk, a conçu le plan de construire le moteur Bolnes dans une version agrandie à la Machinefabriek de Kinderdijk en consultation avec la famille Van Cappellen.
Le moteur Bolnes agrandi a été commercialisé sous le nom de moteur "Smit-Bolnes".
Les moteurs Smit-Bolnes ont été produits à Kinderdijk de 1954 à 1960, après quoi la production a été transférée dans une nouvelle usine de moteurs Smit & Bolnes à Zierikzee.

Turfschuiten en kustvaarders - Een geschiedenis van de Groninger scheepsbouw

The guild brothers of the barge makers' guild in the city of Groningen saw their employment increase significantly in the seventeenth century when the peat extraction of the peat colonies started. The demand for peat barges was so great that they were far from able to meet it. It therefore did not take long before numerous shipyards and shipyards were established in the newly reclaimed peat areas.

That was the beginning of a flourishing industry that still exists today. At first, peat barges were mainly built, but soon the skippers of Groningen asked for larger, seaworthy ships to be able to transport their goods further away. These ships came, with the builders taking into account the narrow canals.
This Dutch book describes the history of shipbuilding in Groningen, in which prosperity and crisis alternated, and shows how the shipbuilders adapted to the changing circumstances.
