Tor Line and the Battle of the North Sea

Resumé - Half a century ago, a global shipping revolution was underway as traditional labour-intensive and time-consuming methods of handling cargo were replaced by containerisation and the parallel development of roll-on, roll-off methods.

On the North Sea, long-established shipping companies were challenged by upstarts, embracing these new technologies. In 1966, Tor Line entered into an already crowded market in the trades between Sweden, the UK and the Netherlands.

Benefiting from effective tonnage and imaginative management, the company gradually gained market share and, during the 1970s, commissioned some of the most advanced passenger and freight ferries yet seen.

This book tells the story of liner and ferry services across the northern North Sea with a focus on Tor Line's development and its attempts to compete with a variety of rivals before being taken over by the Danish giant DFDS.
The book documents the 'inside story' of Tor Line and is lavishly illustrated with numerous previously unpublished illustrations.

DFDS 150

Resumé - In 2016, DFDS celebrates the 150th anniversary of its foundation. The company is among the oldest and most famous European shipping lines. Over the years, DFDS has made a very substantial contribution to the economy and culture of Denmark, Britain and Northern Europe.

Throughout its history, it has carried agricultural exports to the UK plus general cargo and passengers across a wide network of North European overnight routes. In addition, from the latter nineteenth onwards, DFDS was one of Denmark's pre-eminent international liner operators, its route network spanning from the Eastern Mediterranean to the Americas.

During the 1960s, it became a pioneer of roll-on, roll-off shipping methods, bringing far greater efficiency to short-sea shipping and, in the early-1970s, it was among the first shipping companies to develop shore-based logistics operations with large fleets of trucks and associated infrastructure.

Richly illustrated with a text of 140,000 words, illustrated with over 800 photographs, many never previously published, this book provides a unique insight into the development of a historically important company that continues to thrive in the twenty-first century.

Ninety Seconds at Zeebrugge : The Herald of Free Enterprise Story

Resumé - Herald of Free Enterprise set sail on a routine voyage to Dover in March 1987, carrying hundreds of passengers, including British army personnel, day-trippers and drivers.
Minutes after leaving Zeebrugge, the ferry began to capsize. Terrified passengers were separated from loved ones in a seething mass of humanity and in freezing cold water, fighting for their lives.

This is the minute-by-minute account from people who lived through the disaster, from the event to rescue, reunion and repatriation. Including plans, photographs and records that consider how this disaster impacted ferry operating procedures forever, along with contributions from many survivors, relatives and rescue workers, this book is a fitting tribute to all involved.

Ferries Across the Humber - The story of the Humber Ferries and the last coal burning paddle steamers in regular service in Britain

Resumé - Starting with an introduction about discovering the coal-burning paddle steamers of the Humber in the early 1970s the book continues with a brief history of the ferries of the Humber Estuary, the coming of the first paddle steamer, the Caledonia, in 1814 and the rapid expansion of steamers operating on the estuary

It includes personal memories of those who worked on, used and loved the Humber ferries. It especially looks at the paddle steamers, Tattershall Castle, Wingfield Castle and Lincoln Castle, which became the last coal-burning paddle steamers operating a regular service in the United Kingdom.

An appendix lists over 80 paddle steamers from the Caledonia of 1814 to the last of the line the Lincoln Castle identified as working on the Humber Estuary from published and archive sources.
It includes the diesel powered paddle vessel Farringford which saw out the service in 1981 and also other vessels associated with the Hull to New Holland ferry.

Steamers and Ferries of the Northern Isles

Resumé - Services from mainland Scotland to Orkney and Shetland were, from the dawn of steam navigation right up until 2002, in the hands of the North of Scotland, Orkney & Shetland Shipping Company, known as the North Company, whose predecessors dated back to 1790 and which became part of P&O Ferries in 1975.

In this book, Alistair Deayton uses his wonderful collection of photographs to tell the story of the ferries and steamers of the northern isles, including not only the North Company but its successors and competitors on the routes between mainland Scotland and the islands, including chartered vessels and wartime Ministry of War Transport ships travelling to Scapa Flow. The book also includes the inter-island ferries in both Orkney and Shetland, not forgetting the services to remote Foula and Fair Isle.

This book is a must for all those interested in the transport history of Orkney and Shetland and evokes the days when the only way to travel to the northern isles was by sea.
