This study focuses on the mopeds on the German market, which, due to the legal regulations formulated as early as 1953, formed their own, technically particularly interesting class. With these models, initially unrestricted in terms of power and top speed, both German and foreign manufacturers immediately found a broad field for differentiation.

The four German manufacturers Kreidler, Hercules, Zündapp, and Zweirad Union undoubtedly shared the leading roles in this era, which lasted from 1953 to 1981. Maico and the Austrian manufacturers KTM and Puch lagged far behind, while manufacturers such as Honda, Rixe, Yamaha, Garelli, Jawa, and Starflite played only a minor role.

The days when mopeds were carelessly thrown onto the scrap heap are over - a new era has begun: numerous museums now exhibit mopeds. Lovingly curated exhibitions present a wide variety of models to the public, and more and more private collectors are dedicated to preserving them.
