Jeep militaires - depuis 1940 (Willys MB, Ford GPW et Hotchkiss M201)

Malgré son association très fréquente avec la société Willys-Overland américaine, la Jeep fut en réalité étudiée par une équipe travaillant pour le compte d'American Bantam en réponse à une demande de l'US Quartermaster Corps formulée en 1940. Face aux manigances d'une très forte opposition politique, Bantam perdit le marché en faveur de Willys-Overland et de Ford qui finirent par produire environ 640 000 exemplaires de ce qui reste probablement le véhicule le plus reconnaissable du monde, tandis que Hotchkiss produisait en France, bien après la guerre, 28 000 autres Jeep.

Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la Jeep accompagna toutes les armées alliées sur tous les fronts et les militaires des deux camps reconnurent ses qualités de véhicule fiable et passe-partout.
Après la fin de la guerre, des milliers de Jeep furent allouées aux armées des pays européens récemment libérés. D'autres furent "civilisées", mais peu à peu ces véhicules commencèrent à passer aux mains des collectionneurs.
