American Car and Foundry (ACF), a pioneer transportation manufacturer, came into existence in 1899 as a result of the merger of 13 railroad-manufacturing companies. After a complicated transaction in the mid-1920s, ACF had control of the Brill Corp., Hall-Scott Motor Co., and Fageol Motors Co. From the beginning, ACF built both intercity and transit buses.
ACF began to capture large orders for intercity buses, especially when the National Trailways Bus System was formed. Sharp black & white photos with in-depth captions combine to capture this important part of bus history.

Donald Martin Brockway stichtte de Crown Carriage Company in 1904, hetzelfde jaar waarin Henry Ford auto's begon te bouwen. Dit boek vertelt de complete geschiedenis van Crown, van de paardewagens uit het begin van de 20ste eeuw tot de laatste autobussen met methanol-motoren die nog juist voor de sluiting van het bedrijf in 1991 werden gemaakt. De tekst wordt aangevuld met archieffoto's en reproducties van advertenties, bus-emblemen en productiestatistieken.
Behalve aan de standaardproducten wordt ook aandacht besteed aan speciale opdrachten zoals een mobiel raket-volgsysteem voor Lockheed, videobussen voor Art Linkletter en de eerste touringcar met airconditioning, die voor Hawaï werd gebouwd. Crown fabriceerde verder grote aantallen brandweerwagens voor de korpsen van Los Angeles City en County. Ook leverde het bedrijf speciale voertuigen naar Alaska, Zuid-Amerika en het Midden-Oosten.

Crown Coach Corp. - School Buses, Fire Trucks and Custom Coaches
An innovator in the bus business, Fageol was the first company to build a bus from the ground up, and it was called the Safety Coach. Later, in 1927, the Fageol brothers sold out and began Twin Coach. They then built the Model 40 Twin Coach - a twin-engine city bus that began the city bus business. This bus operated for up to 20 years in many cities - a rarity at the time. In 1960, Twin Coach was bought by Flxible.

Hugo Young founded the Flxible Side Car Company in 1913 in Loudonville, Ohio. In the early 1920s, the mass production of automobiles lowered their cost to the point where sidecar-equipped motorcycles could no longer compete. The first Flxible bus was built in 1924, and was among only a few Flxibles built in the 1920s.
